Emma McMullan
Memorial Cup Road Race 2008 |
|
14 June 2008 On Saturday 14 June, Dromara Cycling Club hosted the second Emma McMullan Trophy road race, sponsored by KJM Electrics of Crossgar. The race route was the same as last year starting in Hillsborough and heading out towards Annahilt and then 7 times around the 'Annahilt triangle' consisting of the Ballynahinch Road, Ballycreen Road and Glebe Road. Race headquarters was at Hillsborough Village Centre / Primary School, on the Ballynahinch Road, Hillsborough but the start was out beside the Hockey club on the Comber Road. The riders were split into 3 groups, 3 minutes apart but after only one lap the second group had gained 1 minute on the first group and the 3rd 'scratch' group had gained a similar 1 minute on the second group. Roger Aiken, Adam Armstrong and Neil Caulfield broke away from the scratch group and steadily made their way up through the two groups ahead to finish safely ahead of the bunch sprint. For the bunch sprint, Jonny Beers put in a great effort to stay ahead of Liam McKiverigan to gain 4th place. Well done to the Dromara riders John Celisk, who stayed in with the front group and Ronnie Smyth who sprinted well to arrive ahead of his group and also to Paul Smyth who completed his first open road race. Results 1 Roger Aiken (Banbridge CC) 2 Adam Armstrong (Eurocycles) 3 Neil Caulfield (Newry Wheelers) 4 Jonny Beers (Audi East Antrim) 5 Liam McKiverigan (Banbridge CC) 6 Nathan Morgan (Newry Wheelers) 7 Mark Greer (Maryland Wheeelers) 8 Tony Boyle (Castlereagh CC) 9 Stuart Henry (North Down CC) 10 Shaun Ogle (Northern Dave Kane) Timekeepers: Stephen Phillips & Derek Hanna Marshalls: Noel Gibson, Dennis McMullan, Peter Swann, Stewart Moore, Gary Gray, Brian McGrath, Neal Wilson, Alan McMullan, David Robb, Stephen Wallace, Neill Currie, Maeve Cahill, Mark McKnight and Richard Watters Drivers: Gary Gibson, Nigel Sudlow, Trevor Annett, Jim McMaster, Anne Maguire, Darren Weir Photography: Martin Grimley Many thanks to Hillsborough Village Centre for their support and to the Red Cross for their attendance. |
