Weekend road racing round-up
In a packed schedule of race meets, Nathan Mullen’s superb 2nd place finish at the John Beggs and Sean McGreevy memorial race on Saturday was the highlight of the Dromara CC achievements on the road last weekend.
Competing in the A3 category race alongside clubmates Chris Magowan and Anthony Quinn, Mullen was only just pipped to the finish line in Dromore by local talent Mark Downey. Nathan said after the race he was delighted with the result.
Dromara CC riders Tommy Downey and Ivan Bradford also took part in the event, finishing strongly in the A4 race.
On Sunday Nathan was in action once again, defying what must have been tired legs to take part in the gruelling Tour of the Mournes event promoted by Newry Wheelers. Also in Dromara colours at this event were A3 riders Zak Hanna and Ronnie Smyth, with Smyth finishing the event strongly in wet and windy conditions.
Dromara’s A4 racers turned out en-masse for the popular Aghagallon Cup race, also on Sunday. Ten DCC riders lined up for the start, the largest contingent in the race from a single club. The initially damp conditions gradually improved through the race, and despite a fairly strong wind the pace was high from the off. Some gutsy riding from a few of the Dromara men saw the early breakaways chased down, and although in the end a solo break won the race, several DCC riders were in the chasing pack, with Neill Currie sprinting in to take a well deserved 6th place.
