Fine weather for the Hilly
After having to cancel the event last year due to the Covid-19 restrictions it was great to have riders back to enjoy the Dromara Hilly Leisure Cycle this year. The event, now in its 31st year, took place on Sunday 1 August 2021. It attracted around 100 cyclists this year, around half of what we had back in 2019 but great numbers given the extended period of lockdown. This is a challenging event. Many thanks to all the riders for coming along to support it. You do need to have miles in the legs with plenty of hill climbing to prepare yourself.
For this year there was no mass start and no refreshments at the end of the ride. Riders set off once they were ready and followed the road markings up through Dromara village and into some great climbing (Cornmill, Windy Gap etc.) to the lunch stop at Leitrim GAA club. There they could enjoy tea, coffee, great sandwiches, biscuits and cakes. Once refuelled they could then chose which route to take back. Either finish with 85 km in the bag or go for the 125 km route which included a lot more climbing. Thankfully the weather was kind and the feedback was very positive.
Thanks to Dromara Village Football Club and Leitrim GAA for the use of their facilities. As always, these events don’t happen without volunteer input. Many thanks to all the volunteers who gave up their day to help others enjoy their day.
Hope to see you all next year
