Ferguson takes win as Dromara CC spring into the season
With the snow causing havoc to events across the country it was great to finally get a glimpse of spring. With canceled events getting reorganised it would make for a packed weekend of sport.
Its hard to know where to start on all the Dromara CC news but it seems fitting to congratulate Ben Wilson for getting selected for the cycling ulster team which would see him take on the very best Mountain Bikers at the first round of the British XC Series. The course is at Sherwood Pines in England and the 5km course is made up of fire road, single track and forest sections. Plenty of opportunities for passing and led to a super fast race with the dry but slippery conditions. Ben has been training hard over the winter and produced a great performance with plenty to come from him this year.
Sticking with Mountain Biking the final round of the XMTB Spring Series and Dromara CC were out in force with the MTB youth showing that their appetite for winning has not wained. Aoife Kellett took 2nd in the U8 race which allowed her to take 2nd in the Overall Series. Lexie Broome had a great race as she took 5th in the U10’s. James Armstrong was showing a great effort to claim 2nd on the day and take 2nd overall for the series. Even though Ben Wilson was away competing in the British XC Series he still had enough points to claim 3rd in the overall series. Wannita Broome started her season off with a brilliant 3rd place. In the A race Barry Kellett got back on the podium with a respectable 3rd place but Davy Broome put in a battling performance to take 5th place and claim 2nd overall in the series. Robert Davison kept everyone honest with another solid ride to take 9th place on the day.
On the road front, we would see Nathan Mullan, Aaron Watson, Gavin Magowan, Ronnie Smyth and Stevie Irvine compete in the Tour of Ards. With great weather, it was a fast and eventful race with several Dromara men in the breaks. No wins this time but plenty more to come as the season goes. The PJ logan was held on Sunday and it would see Neil Armstrong produce another great ride to take 4th place in the A4 race and pick up some valuable points as he aims for an A3 upgrade. In the A3 race, Jack Ferguson would show that he has kept all that great form from the cyclocross races to claim his first victory of the season. Congratulations Jack and no doubt this won’t be the last.
This week see’s the start of the first TT’s with Dromore hosting a 5 mile TT on Tuesday night. See you all there.
Thanks to the Belgium project for the photo of Jack taking the chequered flag.
