The first round of the Ulster Mountain Bike Cross Country took place at Tollymore Forest Park with Dromara CC pulling out all the stops to put on another great event. When the event finally gets started it is sometimes hard to appreciate the time and effort some members put in to make this race. Brian Wilson certainly knows Tollymore Forest well to design a very challenging course with the rest of the team ready to prepare it by raking and clearing lines. This of course doesn’t stop once the event starts as many gave up their time to server food/marshal/coordinate so a Huge Well Done to all involved.
In the morning of the event we saw the youngsters prove that it doesn’t matter if it rains they will pull on the cycling helmets and take to the start line. It wasn’t long before Dromara CC had their first podium of the day with young Aoife Kellett producing an awesome ride to secure third place. In the U10’s race Lexi Broome took 6th place in the girls race with James Armstrong putting in a strong performance to take 7th in the U10’s boys race. It was in the U16’s race that would see Ben Wilson claim the second podium of the day with an excellent 3rd place. In the S4 race Neil Armstrong and Derek Minis both enjoyed the very technical course to take 9th and 11th place but it was the ladies race which would see more success for Dromara CC with Lisa Millar taking 2nd place however Andra Ungureanu was just pipped on the line and had to settle for 4th place.
The main race of the day would see the S1, S2 and S3 riders take to the start line. In the S3 race Brian Wilson would should his skills and produce a super performance to claim a third place with Graham Smyth in 10th , Adrian Booth in 13th and Gibson Chambers taking 19th. Davy Broome has moved up from S3 to S2 this year and in his first race he proved he is certainly not going to struggle with a brilliant 5th place. Another Dromara man who has upgraded is Peter Davison who competed in his first S1 race and it will certainly be one to forget with punctures galore although this didn’t stop him from battling to 11th place.
Many thanks must go to all the helpers from Dromara CC who spent huge amount of time to put this event together and prepare a very technical course.
