Team Dromara CC take A Race prize again as Larne provides brutal conditions

It was only last week I was saying how nice the winter had been and really it isnt ‘real’ cyclocross until you are knee deep on mud and people are changing bikes every lap. This week Larne served up a bit more traditional weather with plenty of muck, rain and even a bit of wind. The good news it that Dromara CC riders are made of sterner stuff which certainly includes the junior squad.
Aoife Kellett is enjoying racing in the U8’s and is getting faster and faster each week and taking 4th this week. Eoin Foley took to the start line in a large field of U8 boys making the racing chaotic but he battled through to take 17th. In the Under 10’s James Armstrong had a tough race in the muck and took 16th place but I have been informed he is looking a comeback into the top 10 so he doesnt have to clean his dads bike. In the U12’s Ben Quigley has been gaining confidence each race and was very close to a top 10 finish this week which I am sure will come very shortly but 12th place is still plenty to shout about. Fraser Harrower produced another solid display in the U14’s to take 9th place and show he is comfortable sitting in the top 10. Ben Wilson was digging deep to compete in the U16’s race and the 5th place he gained was hard fought for.
The MTB Race started with a few Dromara CC representatives missing……this didnt stop Neil Armstrong from taking the holeshot and taking 8th place. Neil tells me Colin didn’t want to roll about in the muck today but would be back soon once he had found some lad Ward or Woodall who are yet to make their debut.

Wannita Broome had terrible luck last week with a puncture that cut her race short but she has been out secret training and produced a excellent performance to take 6th place and not a stones throw away from taking 5th. With that sort of performance under her belt the chance of a podium cannot be that far away.
The B race saw Brian Wilson keep his form and battle around to take a 14th place with Robert Davison having a great race to take 30th and keep Bryce behind him in 40th with Mike Barton managing to make it round this week to take 47th. Great racing all round with John Shanks taken out earlier in the week with Man Flu and Adi Booth and Gibson Chambers not allowed out to play although Bryce tells me they are running scared….cant wait for Ormeau.
The Main race of the day saw Barry Kellett, Davy Broome, Graham Smyth, Derek Graham and Peter Davison take to the start line to try and reclaim the team prize from Newry Wheelers. Everyone was wondering if Roger would turn up as I know Barry mentioned in his interview last week. Well he sure did turn up but Barry Kellett and Graham Boyd made him work for his victory this week. It was nip and tuck the whole race with Roger using the falling in front of Barry to slow him down and Glenn Kinning proving he can break any bike. When the dust settled or the muck was wiped off Roger had taken the victory with Graham Boyd a mere 5 secs back and Barry taking 3rd place and only 18secs further back.
With Peter Davison rolling about in the muck this week it was Graham Smyth and Davy Broome who battled the whole race with Davy finishing 18th and Graham finishing 21st meaning Dromara CC reclaimed their team prize. Peter managed to complete the race in 27th although the rolling down the hill technique needs a bit of work. Derek Graham always revels in these type of conditions and he battled hard to take 40th place. Barry tells me that the top pit crew of Wannita and Robert Davison was hard to beat this week and his first pitstop would have been perfect except he was looking for his white bike on the first time into the pits only to realise he was riding it.
Next week is Ormeau Park so hope to see you all there. Many thanks to Team Madigan for yet again putting on a great event.
