Lady Dixon Park was the place chosen for Round three of the Ulster Cyclocross Series. The host club Phoenix CC yet again put on an excellent event which had to deal with weather warnings and just a drop or two of water. The start of the day saw the worst of the rain which just stopped for the Under 6 race to start. The first Dromara CC rider to race was James Armstrong in the Under 10 race who put in a tremendous performance to take 12th place and without an unfortunate crash would surely have made the top 10.
Fraser Harrower was flying the Dromara CC flag in the boys Under 14 race and he certainly didn’t disappoint with a hard fought 7th place. In the boys under 16 race Ben Wilson was out showing that he can once again hold his own in a very elite category. Ben managed to take 4th place on the day.
The MTB Support race saw Neil Armstrong and Colin McGready go head to head again on the mucky Lady Dixon course. Neil has clearly been watching Barry Kellett as he raced off to claim the holeshot(First person to the first corner) but Colin has a more relaxed style evening waving to the crowd. As the mucky course took its toll it was Neil who held on to take 9th place with Colin not far behind in 11th.
The Female cyclocross race saw two Dromara CC ladies take on a very challenging course. Diane Wilson is no stranger to cyclocross and put in a great display to take 7th place on her first race out this season. Wannita Broome having taken her place on the podium last week for the mtb race needed a new challenge and she found it in a tough cyclocross race. She was unlucky not to finish the race but no doubt will be one to watch in the future races.
The Cyclocross B race saw the return of Bryce Hetherington who was fired up to take on the other Dromara CC B racers like John Shanks, Brian Wilson, Adi Booth, Paul Watson & Robert Davison. No doubt he will go home very pleased with beating Booth and Wilson even though both riders had a mechanical. John Shanks took the honour of the first DCC man home in 24th but had to fight hard for that as Paul Watson was undercutting A1 riders just to try and keep up with young Shanks. Paul will no doubt be delighted with 27th and to keep Robert Davison behind him as he took 32nd.

The main race of the day saw Graham Smyth take on his first cyclocross race of the season and prove his secret training has clearly been going well as he took 34th with Richard Cowan not far behind in 39th. Derek Graham having been unable to get into the B race stepped up to the A race but the mucky course managed to wreck his derailleur. Nathan Mullan battled all race and put in a great performance to take 25th place and hold off a fast moving Davy Broome. Peter Davison who complained about the muddy conditions all day was clearly bluffing as he had a fantastic race to take 13th and third espoir. It was certainly one of the rides of the day and would only just be eclipsed by a determined Barry Kellett who having lead the field through the first corner managed to hold on to a podium spot reclaim his second place in the series so far.

The unsung hero award must go to Nathans dad Michael who managed to work in the pits looking after everyones bike change as well as clean and prep Barry’s and Nathans bike. It was an amazing job when you consider he was not only washing bikes and keeping an eye for anyone needing a bike change, Thankfully he managed to rope in some help from Shimna Wheelers and test out their pressure hose so many thanks to them, no doubt we will return the favour. If anyone would like to have a go to see if they could handle a job in the CX pits Michael will be delighted for the company.
Finally all of the Dromara CC Riders would like to thank all the marshals and volunteers from Phoenix CC which took the time to put on a very professional race.
