After last weeks mud fest at Lurgan Park it seems the weather has changed its mind again and brought Summer back for a last hoorah. This week saw round 2 of the Ulster Cyclocross Series taking place at Falls Park. For those that did the event last year it was a muck affair with plenty of action happening at the pits. This year the ground was much firmer and therefore a faster race.
Dromara CC junior section have been performing well at the start of the season and there was little change this week as Eoin Foley and Eva Cowan tackled the U6 course with great success. Aoife Kellett having moved up to the U8 girls race started easy before carving through the field to take 5th place.
The U10 boys saw James Armstrong make his debut last week and this week he was throwing down the gauntlet to his father with an excellent 8th place after a gutsy sprint to the line. With Neil Armstrong in the MTB support race the pressure was now on.

The U12 boys race saw Matthew Douglas and Benjamin Quigley compete in a fiercely competitive section. Both boys proved they have the Dromara CC spirit finishing 16th and 18th respectively. Fraser Harrower is an experienced campaigner in these junior races and his performance in the U14 boys race showed his fighting spirit as he took a very well deserved 7th place.
There is always a rider who digs deep and produces an awesome ride when in Dromara CC colours and this week young Ben Wilson showed he can mix it with the big boys. Ben has moved up to the Under 16’s category this year and you would expect his podium’s would have to wait until he gets a bit older to compete. Clearly Ben quite enjoys being on the podium and put in a stonking race effort to take a clear 3rd place.
In the MTB support race Neil Armstrong, Colin McCready and Kevin Walker went head to head just like they have been doing all season in the Club League. Neil Armstrong clearly under pressure from his son’s 8th place made every effort to surpass that however 9th place surely means he is cleaning everyones MTB shoes this week. The silver lining was that he beat the other two Dromara Men. Colin was trying a new tactic to stay ahead of Kevin Walker which involves rolling in the muck so no one can get past. Turns out that wasn’t as bad tactic as he held on to just pip Kevin.
The ladies race saw Wannita Broome take her MTB and show the ladies how it is done by carving through the field to take a tremendous 3rd place. Jackie Wade and Emma Johnson took part in the ladies cyclocross race and both held their own in a tough field with Jackie taking 11th and Emma 13th. Great Performances all round.

The Cyclocross B race saw Darren McCann put in a great performance considering it only his second race and is climbing up the leaderboard at every race. John Shanks and Derek Graham had a great battle with Derek just pipping John to take 27th place. However Brian Wilson showed he prefers when the going gets tough and gloopy but can still teach the youngsters a thing taking 19th place and top Dromara CC B race rider again.
The main event of the day was of course the Cyclocross A race with Richard Cowan, Nathan Mullan, Davy Broome, Peter Davison and Barry Kellett. The start was incredibly fast with the sand trap causing chaos among the field. Barry Kellett kept up his great form and managed to take 3rd place. Peter Davison showed he is getting faster with a brilliant 15th Place with Davy Broome not far behind in 20th. Nathan Mullan and Richard Cowan had races to forget as they took 40th and 48th respectively.
Many thanks to VC Glendale and all their helpers for putting on an epic event at Falls Park. We move to Lady Dixon Park on the 16th October hosted by Phoenix CC. Hope to see you all there.
