Dromara CC’s 27th annual “Hilly” Leisure cycle on Sunday 14th August was a resounding success, with over 170 cyclists of all ages and abilities tackling the challenging course around the Dromara Hills and Mourne mountains. The club used the event to raise funds for the chosen charity of the Mayor of Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council, which this year is Tiny Life, the charity for premature babies and their families. Mayor Brian Bloomfield and Mayoress Rosslyn were both in attendance at the event HQ, Dromara Village FC, to chat to participants before formally starting the event. From Dromara the riders followed the well-established route around some of the toughest hills in Co. Down, including the “Cornmill Hill” on Lakeland Road, Dree Hill at Slieve Croob, and the “Windy Gap” on the Slievenaboley Road. In Leitrim the riders enjoyed a well earned break, with a sumptuous selection of food to give them the energy to complete their chosen route. From the Lunch stop the riders had a choice of taking on the full 125km distance by following a loop taking in Spelga Dam in the Mourne Mountains, or more direct route back tor Dromara making the distance 85km. On return to the HQ, riders were fed again with tasty burgers cooked on the BBQ.
The club committee would like to thank all members, family and friends who helped run the event. Big thanks also to Chain Reaction Cycles for supporting the event with a mobile bike repair team and providing all the entrants with a free goody bottle, Dromara Village FC for the use of their clubhouse and grounds, Leitrim GAA Club for the use of their hall for the lunch stop, and the motorbike marshals for keeping everyone safe. We hope to see you all again next year!!
