This weekend saw a vast array of events take place from Dromara CC’s anniversary cycle to NDGP to the Ulster MTB Championships. Dromara CC has always had a great showing at the MTB events but with our top man scraping his knee when showing off on the mtb it was an unknown how everyone would hold up on a very technical course. For those lucky enough to get down for a recce of the course prior to Sunday it was described as dusty, not that technical fast course…….roll on a couple of days of rain and the course turned into a muddy, technical fast course.

In the under 6 race Eva C and Rylee B had to move into a 2 up after being held up by a crash at the very front. Both put in a storming performance in the wet slippery conditions. In the under 8 we saw Lexie B, Kaitlyn M and finally Aoife K making the step up to her first U8 race. It turned out to be a tough race with a climb that would have tested most of the adult field however they all got over it(twice!) and even battled through the boys who started before them. Lexie took 6th with Kaitlyn and Aoife not far behind in 10th and 12th respectively. In the U10 race Casey M showed her skillz to take a well deserved 7th place.

In the Under 14 race our first medal was won with Ben Wilson storming around this technical course and producing lap times anybody would have been proud off. It was a tremendous display of skill and I expect he will be taking courses soon to show how he can make a bike move that fast over this type of terrain #nofear.
With the Dromara CC Youth setting the tone for the day the pressure was on for the rest of the team to produce some excellent performances. It was Peter Davison who put the Irish nationals behind him to put his head down and produce a great performance to take a well deserved silver medal. Bragging rights in the Davison household are hard earned and Robert clearly must have had an eye on those. In the M50/M60 class he managed to pull away from his closest competitor to finish out on his own to take the Gold medal – there are rumours he has asked for his postbox to be painted gold but I cant confirm if that will be happening #itisnttheolympics.

This left the M40’s with Brian W, Richard C and Gibson C flying the flag with Brian “I haven’t been training and I was out running yesterday in the mountains” W having a great start and he didn’t slow down until he hit the finish line taking 4th place. Richard C and Gibson “I haven’t been on the bike since the last time I was on it” C managed to battle round taking 5th and 7th respectively.
The M30’s saw John Shanks dig in and put a great performance to claim a 9th place in a tough category. The elites saw Barry “Have i told you about my sore leg” K and Davy B tackle the main category of the day. Gareth McKee and James Curry stormed away from the start leaving the rest to battle over the bronze. Both riders put in a super effort registering some outstanding lap times #droplikeastone leaving Barry taking 4th and Davy taking 7th.
Many thanks to Banbridge CC for putting on a tremendous Championship and holding the rain off until we had all finished. A good shout out to the marshals who were all around the course and to the sign on team who gave up their time for this great event.
