Smyth takes 5th at Carn Classic & the MTBers have fun in the sun at Ormeau
This weekend there was plenty to do when it came to road cycling, mountain biking and even a bit of running. The Road Racers headed to the Carn Classic where David Dickson, Matthew Armstrong and Ronnie Smyth took to the start line. Both youngsters had very strong rides with both getting into breaks and staying close to the front. After a quiet 2015 for Ronnie Smyth clearly he has been training hard ready for the 2016 season. Sometimes it takes a bit of experience to win a classic race like this and young Smyth has buckets loads of that. The wily fox managed to get into a break of 9 riders which held of the chasing pack with Ronnie taking a well deserved 5th place after the gallop to the line.
With the dry weather taking hold and even the sun making an appearance the second round of the XMTB Series at Ormeau Park saw a completely dry course. The Dromara CC Youth were out in force and producing some excellent results. Timothy Irvine had a great ride in the under 6’s taking 7th place with Aoife Kellett really getting the grips of this mtb’ing with a superb 3rd female (getting more podiums than her dad). In the Under 8’s Corbin Dobson finished in 17th place in what is becoming a very competitive category. In the Under 10’s Caleb Dobson took 14th with Alex Harrower just in front in 12th place – they seem to be getting quicker and quicker each week. In the Under 14’s Ben Wilson produced an excellent ride to take 2nd place but in the under 16’s Max Melville ran out of luck on the third lap with a mechanical.
In the Juniors Peter Davison managed to stay on the bike (just about) to put in an awesome ride to take an excellent win on this fast course. In the B race Mike Barton and Kyle Irvine battled around the course with Mike taking 17th place and Kyle taking 21st. In the A Race Davy Broome was eager to get going with the prospect of beating young Kellett a real possibility however Barry managed to grab 5th place after telling everyone how sick he has been with Davy Broome taking an excellent 8th. Brian Wilson and Richard Cowan had a decent battle with Brian sneaking off to take 18th and Richard licking his wounds taking 21st and counting the days until the next encounter.
All in all a great event with superb organisation from the XMTB team and no doubt we will be bak again for the the last round in the series.
