Magowan takes FlatField Victory
With the week starting off like it was January again it did not seem like the club league would remain unscathed from the changeable weather. Thankfully the weather was kind and even the sun made an appearance.
The start of the week I may have suggested alternative groups which seem to send panic through the rank and file members. By Thursday I expected to find a horses head in the bed.
When everyone arrived Scratch or should I say the magowan’s & Ronnie moved into the charm offensive. “Scratch actually goes slower than Grp 4 at the start”, “we will take it easy tonight”, “sure BVK is MTBer and he can hold on”……
So with 4 groups decided and several lambs to the slaughter in scratch the marshals went to get into place. It goes with out saying that we have the best and most professional marshals in the business. We cannot say it enough so here goes again “Many Many thanks for taking the time to marshal – all racers really appreciate it”
The race can be seen again on the strava fly by link here.
The race started as fast as ever as groups tried to figure out how to work together to make a seamless fast running machine that could eat up the road. With all the youngsters now in scratch there was a potent mix of enthusiasm as they shot off the line. It didn’t take long until a few got unhitched from scratch and grp 4 was in view.
By the time the third lap was over everyone had been caught and those still in the race were holding on for their lives. With what was left of scratch still pushing the pace the next few laps saw the lead group disintegrate. The cyclist who put in the ride of the night must be young Matthew Armstrong who got talked into scratch and then attacked on the 4th lap only to be swallowed up by the group – what a way to cement your place in scratch. Finally on the last lap Gavin and BVK made a decisive break up the last climb to the finish with Gavin sprinting in to take victory. Not bad for a man who isn’t race fit so I am told.
When the dust had settled and the biscuits had been polished off the results could be calculated. We need to pass on our thanks to the Pastor at Elim Church for allowing us to use the car park. Many Thanks to the top tea/coffee servers and to Martin for keeping everyone in line.
Results are below and when i get my finger out we might have a club league update – watch this space.
