Round 15 – The 5 Up DCC Team Time Trial
A team time trial (TTT) is a road-based bicycle race in which teams of cyclists race against the clock.
Unlike individual time trials where competitors are not permitted to ‘draft’ (ride in the slipstream) behind each other, in team time trials, riders in each team employ this as their main tactic, each member taking a turn at the front while team-mates ‘sit in’ behind. After their turn, the lead rider will swing over, allowing the next rider to take the lead, while the leader goes to the back of the team.
We have watched it live as the Giro Boys showed how it was done but they dont hold a torch to the DCC Posse. Building on from last year’s successful 5-up the road commission set about mixing up the teams so that there would be an even spread of experienced and newcomers to the sport. This year they also doubled the distance and made it a ‘there and back again’ time trial. Teams set off with 3 minutes gaps to complete the 16 mile distance.
- Team 6 – Marcus M, Noel G, Matthew G, Gareth W, Massimo and Davy McC (team of 6!!) finished in 40:52
- Team 2 – Chris M, Tommy D, Lisa M, Raymund M and Ryan C finished in 42:01
- Team 5 – Trevor W, Derek G, Kevin W, Davy Y, Michael H finished in 43:37
- Team 3 – Gavin M, Zak H, Rodney McC (guest), Paul G, Gail M finished in 46:20
- Team 1 – Ronnie S, Stephen W, Colin R, Ruth B, Linda F finished in 46:54
- Team 4 – Nathan M, Gary B, Sean S, Eddie D, Roisin McI finished in 56:20
Special mention to Raymund M who fell at the turn but jumped back onto his feet and back onto the bike. Not bad for a 70 year old!
Also mention to Michael H who has just joined the club this week and tonight was his first league event.
After the event was over there was plenty of buzz with everyone enjoying the Tea & Coffee. I hope everyone found it useful to have a rare go at a Team Trial – never as easy as it looks on TV.
Many thanks to the timekeepers – Derek H and Davy R, to the marshals (and catering team) at the start Aoife and Bernie, to Martin for keeping things in order as always, to the photographer Richard C, to the marshals at Annahilt – John S and Graham McC and to the marshals at the turn – Barry Van K, Gary G and Conor R.
