Dromara Cycling Club
2008
Christmas Dinner and Awards Night

Friday 5 December 2008

Millbrook Lodge was the venue for Dromara Cycling Club's Christmas Dinner and Awards Night.  The prize giving took place before the meal was ready in a separate room for use just by the club.  Just over 60 riders and guests had bought tickets for the event and Trevor had to work hard to organise the prize giving of 21 awards (which is almost double the amount we had the year before!).  The awards were presented by selected club members some of whom had purchased the actual cup/trophy they were presenting.  Many thanks to all the members who had purchased the trophies this year.

Some of the new awards this year was the "Annahilt Shield", for a three lap club race around the Annaihilt triangle, kindly donated by Stephen Wallace and won by Darren Weir.  Anne Maguire presented the Dromara CC Leisure Trophy to Maeve Cahill for her contribution to leisure runs this year.  Stephen Phillips had donated a plaque for the highest placed female rider in  the Dromara CC Thursday evening league which was won by Anne Maguire.  New member Andrew Wilson had also contributed a cup for the Best Placed Vet in the Club League which was won by David Robb.  Nigel Sudlow provided the trophy for the Club Race Champion which was for the combined total of points received in all the Thursday evening club races. This year's winner was Darren Weir.    The Mountain bike section of the club were not forgotten as club treasury Vivienne Crawford supplied a beautiful trophy for the Dromara MTB rider of the year, winner was Ross Galway. Ross has proved a strong all round rider as he also won the Glassdrumman Road Race Cup, sponsored by Seamus Downey Cycles Dromore, for the highest number of points from two club races on the Glassdrumman circuit.

Other awards winners were 1st cat David McKnight with two trophies and Marcus Magowan, John Celisk, Mark McKnight with one each. Darren Weir went away with three awards in the end but the man with the most silverware to clean was Ronnie Smyth with four trophies.
The largest cheers on the night went to Brian McGrath and Paul Smyth. Brian won the Weir Cup, sponsored by Darren Weir, for the most improved new Dromara rider.  Paul Smyth has improved greatly in this his second year with Dromara and this was shown as he won two trophies.  First was the Crossgare Plaque, sponsored by Wilby Hanna Coachworks, for the most improved time on the Dundrum Road 10 mile time trail.  Paul improved by three minutes ten seconds in six months, an excellent result. These steady but major improvements ensured that Paul was a clear winner of the overall Dromara League Trophy, sponsored by club chairman James McMaster, with a total of 691 points.

The last prize given out was the Dromara Youth Award. This is given each year to the youth who has improved most over the last season. Noeline and Derek Hanna were delighted to receive the award for their son Ben.

After the ceremony drew to an end we were able to be seated for Christmas dinner.  Taking up almost half the room the 61 guests enjoyed the food and the music and dancing afterwards.  Many thanks to the staff in the Millbrook Lodge for their hospitality.
