Dromara riders rise to Cat 1

Dromara Cycling Club go from strength to strength with an emphatic 4th, 5th and 6th place in this race. This means that David McKnight moves up to Cat 1, a lot more travelling next year for him. Darren Weir and Ronnie Smyth also move up to cat 2. This was a great display of team riding, something that has been missing in one or two races this year.

 Mourne Sportive 12th August 2007

Around 124 set out from Dromara this morning to take on their choice of 4 hill packed challenges ranging from 68km to 170km

For the early starters the prospects looked grim with a wet start to the day but fortunately this was to clear with only the odd shower throughout the day.

There were reports of many punctures caused mainly by gravel washed onto the road during the night. Coyle's Hill near Hilltown was so bad that the lower part of the road had to be walked, with the tarmac lifted in places.

Most found their way without problems although some did go wrong around Hilltown. Fortunately they were able to phone for directions or if needed mechanical assistance from Dennis McMullan who supplied backup.

Plenty of help was given from club members, notably Trevor, Jim, Martin, Ann, Alistair and Mr BBQ Stephen Philips assisted by his wife.

Not that they mean anything but you can view the times and average speed from the Sportive here.

This years club calendar kicked of this evening with a 2up 10 mile Time Trial on the Dundrum Road Dromara. 16 in total made up the 8 teams Young bros Ben and Matthew McKelvey were first away and second back as they had just 4 mile to cover. Last away and first back were Bob and Caroline due to a puncture within the first mile.

Davy Rob coped well with his debut as time keeper. Especially considering 4 of the teams returned within 19 sec. Jim McMaster managed the turn on his own. Someone mentioned he may have missed his vocation!  See down left column for Full results

Both usually leave from the same place at roughly the same time then meet later on for tea, coffee, soup etc.  Click here to link to our message board for more details.
