Ten
met up at the Civic Centre. Regulars Alan, Stewart, Pete were there with a come
back appearance from Peter Swann (with new bike) and East Coaster Ross. We were
joined by newcomers to the tow path run, John McGuigan, Stephen, Kyle A and
Raymund Martin. Missing tonight, Adrian, Dennis, Kyle I. We all set
off at 7 promptly for a nice steady run down the path until the first regroup
spot. After which Ross took the lead and set a tough pace (he must be coming
back into form!). Alan stayed with him with Pete never far behind. The group got
quite stung out until the footbridge. Ross got to the front again and it was
another charging pace to the Ring. I spoke with Neill Currie by phone to arrange
a meet up at Shaw's bridge. When we got there Neill joined us but Peter Swann
headed home. Nice blast through the trees with all seeing how well their
lights worked. John, Raymund and Kyle had a rude awakening on those tight
climbs. All safely out and back onto the main tow path for a fast spin to
Stranmillis. Back home via the Meadows (tough as always) and then up to Malone
House. This climb can really tear the lungs out and had a couple pushing their
bikes up. Down through the trees again with Neill leaving us at the
Track. We re-grouped on the path for a nice sail home. The weather was
mild and dry all evening with a light shower at Malone House and then a heavier
shower as we neared home. Kyle A left us at Seymour Hill, Stewart left at
Hilden. Back at the Civic Centre for 9:20. Rain on heavy just as we were packing
up. No time to stand around chatting. Great night out. Hopefully the
newcomers have not been put off and will be back for more fun next week We missed
seeing how well Adrian's new light worked. Perhaps next week we will get the
demonstration! Martin

Great
night out at the tow path. Mild, dry big turn out, 12 in total. The Losers
(3), Kyles (2), Stephen, Peter S, Ross, Neill, Adrian, me and Davy Robb making
his first appearance with new bike and lights! We set off at 7 for a
steady pace down the path, Ross and I lead the way. Up and over the footbridge
which had a mtber standing on his own at the bottom advising us of fallen
branches ahead. We didn't see any. A charge from this point
lead by Ross. Up and around the Ring with Davy R taking a tumble at one of the
corners. Across the Ring, out the other side, down nettle lane and paused to fix
Peter S's light fitting. Charge on to Shaw's bridge. Lost Davy R (took a phone
call from his wife "where are you, when are you home..." or similar. He dropped
the phone, when he looked up we had disappeared). I spent a fair bit of time
cycling back, ringing etc. Finally got him and he had turned for home. Hopefully
out further next week Davy Great spin through the
trees. I was feeling good and was enjoying the charging up the hills. At the car
park Peter S "took a wrong turn" and stayed in the car park until we returned
from the loop. All off again back to the tow path for a charge down
towards Stranmillis. Neill got us to cut in early to the Meadows. Another great
sprint around here. I had a good push with Neill C at the front. Back to
the path for a quick sprint towards Shaw's bridge. Dennis and Stewart skipped
out "cardiac hill - as Jim calls it" up to Malone House. That felt good too. On
down through the trees, around the track (Neill left here) with a nice run
through the BMX jumps. The ground was very dry. Quick run back to Lisburn. I
stayed at the back with Adrian. Don't think I would have kept up. Everyone
feeling good tonight. Back for 9:25. Hope to see the great turnout
continue as the winter weather approaches. Martin

Eight
out for the run tonight - Raymond, Peter, Kyle A, Kyle I, Steven, Atomic,
Stewart and Dennis. The chickens this week are: Davy Robb (a bit sore
yet), Adrian (Martin thinks he needs a week’s recovery in between runs), Pedals
(Atomic thinks he just isn’t fast enough yet), John McG (keeping the boss
happy), Martin (caught a horrifically deadly strain of ManFlu) and Ross left
holding the baby?? Ya all missed a good run
with light winds and 11c it was cold to begin with until we worked up a sweat.
Straight run down to the Ring and onto Belvoir missing out the forest and onto
the Waterfront which was really nice as it was so calm. The return run was via
the meadows ( apologies to Peter as I remember passing him far too close down
one of the hills). As usual these 3 hills really get your heart beating to
the max and they don’t seem to get any easier. Atomic bit the dust at the bottom
as he was trying to act the young fella again As we got to close to
Barnets (Cardiac Hill) Atomic was first through the gate and I heard the
mumblings of others as we all realized he was turning right towards the climb
. There was
no discussion this week, d**n hard climb. With Pedals and Martin absent Atomic
was feeling confident for the victory . I actually don’t know who was
first to the top as I was “on the rev limiter” by the time I got to the top Through the BMX jumps
and towards the run back home. With Raymond and myself at the front, Atomic and
Dennis behind I pushed hard at the park bench expecting it to be like a red rag
to a bull but Atomic didn’t follow . I waited up as they passed me
by and Raymond had caught up again. All home safe after a great run.
Busted as usual but smiling Forgot to check the
mileage but think it was approx 27-28 ( correct me if i'm
wrong) Roll on next week. Stewart. |

out tonight. Pedals Pete, Stephen H, Stewart, Peter S, Dennis, Kyle I, Surfer
Stephen and me. Surfer Stephen began with a puncture which he found as he was
taking the bike out of his car. All set off at 7:05 most of
us unnecessarily wrapped up as it was quite a mild evening on the path (Kyle I
was only one in shorts). There was some light drizzle on the way down to the
steel bridge. Surfer Stephen and I were leading the pack. Onwards towards the
footbridge with only a brief stop as Pedals Pete sorted out his borrowed light.
Oh, apart from almost running into another cycling group coming the other way
which Surfer Stephen only noticed at the last minute. Brakes well tested we all
moved on. Over the footbridge for a fast run along the far side of the
river. We turned up towards the Ring and had a great spin around the excellent
path. Met a man and his dog on the far side of the ring who remarked that his
dog thought we were aliens and rushed over to investigate us. Looking back at
all the big lights I could see where his and his dog was coming
from... Down through nettle run, I followed Kyle down past the car with
the steamed up windows Dennis and I lead the pack
towards Minnowburn turning in towards the path along the far side of Shaw's
bridge. Nice run here then through the trees. Great spin in here. Dennis and I
leading the pack up the first climb. As we came back round towards the cross
roads I heard the dreaded hiss. Puncture rear wheel. All stop. Glass cut through
the tire and tube. New tube fitted. Stewart's big pump came out and sorted out
the problem with a little help from Surfer Stephen. On we went. I was
feeling good and took the next big climb up to the car park with Dennis right
beside me. The loop was very good with Pedals Pete and Dennis beating me up the
path back to the car park. Peter S left us here and headed back to Lisburn ....
and then there were 7. Fast run along the tow path towards Stranmillis,
not seeing anyone along this stretch. Another excellent run in the Meadows. Lung
busting. Back to the path Pedals Pete and I lead the pack back to Shaw's
bridge (seen Johnny Bogues). At Shaw's Stephen H left us. He had parked his car
here and had cycled to meet us in Lisburn. I made sure the rest took on cardiac
hill, up to Malone House. Alan would be proud. Super night for the path. I lead
the 6 down through the trees and around the track. Dennis and Pedals skipped the
BMX section. Kyle was pleased to have got through the exit dip for the second
week in a row. We kept it together for the run back to Lisburn with the usual
burst just before the arched bridge. Pedals was chucked out the back at this
rise but soon made his way back to the front. Stewart left us at Hilden,
and then there were 5. Nice paced run with Pete and Kyle on the front, Dennis
and me on the second row and Surfer Stephen at the back, all bunched together.
With the end in sight Dennis, Pedals and Surfer Stephen went for it. I excused
myself past Kyle and took off after the 3 with the Civic Centre looming. I
managed to reach Stephen and then had a great sling shot passing both Dennis and
Pete on the grass on the left of the path. I was rather glad the grass was not
too wet. All back for 9:25 with 24-25 mile on the clock. Super
night !!! Looking forward to next week. I've been off the bike for 2
weeks with a head cold but after tonight I now feel ready for the CX race on
Sunday. Martin

out tonight, Team Losers (Dennis and Stewart, no Alan), Kyle I, Raymund, Neill,
and for the first time, Massimo. Set off at 7 pm sharp ( ), mild night but the path
was wet in places with lots of leaves down. Raymund and I took point, him on his
squeeky bike (front brake issue). Steady run down towards the stop area and then
further down to the footbridge. Crossed it with no problems, headed around the
Ring, through to Shaw's bridge with everyone sticking together. In
through the trees but didn't get far before Kyle got a puncture. He was then
treated to an audience as he changed his front wheel (with the most awkward
wheel release ever!), co2 courtesy of Neill and then we were off. Dennis and
Stewart were up ahead. All back together we set off around the loop and then off
towards the car park. On the run up to the big climb we saw strange lights
approaching. A police car The officer stopped us for a
chat. Supposedly shots had been heard in the area. Off we went again around the
car park loop, however this time we had stragglers. This meant a bit of a
"spread out an search". Picked up our wondering pair but we had used up a lot of
time so we decided to skip the Meadows and headed back towards Lisburn. Nice run
back to Shaw's. I dropped to the back to ensure no further drop offs. All
up the cardiac climb to Malone House, Raymund making it up for the first time
without resorting to pushing. Neill left us at the track. Massimo and I had a
nice sprint through the trees. I completed the BMX bit on my own (Massimo can do
this bit next time!). All back together for a nice run back to Lisburn.
Without Atomic and Pedals there was no sprint. Great run on a lovely mild
night. All back safely for 9:30. Glad we didn't go too hard as I need
some energy for the Night Race at Craigavon Martin

Thursday 4 November 2010
I
only had one confirmed last night (Neill) with some riders having family members
who were not well, work getting in the way and one buying a car. There were the
usual who didn't respond to the text (Dennis!), so I wasn't expecting many. When
I arrived I was pleasantly surprised to see 4 vehicles parked with 5 riders
milling around. Neill (of course), Surfer Stephen (who doesn't use a mobile ), Massimo
(it wasn't too wet for him), and a welcome return for Colin and Davy. We
got ready and headed off at 7pm, only to stop within feet as my Nuke proof light
had a red flashing light on top instead of the usual blue. Much fiddling around.
All finally off with me on the front still fiddling with my lights (I had to
resort to a small headlight as well). Nice steady run down towards the steel
bridge, no stopping at the usual picnic spot, and pushed on to the footbridge.
All over this. As we were regrouping on the other side we seen a train of 8
riders on the far side and shouted the common greeting "All right
lads!". Quick burst on the other side of the bank with me acting as
sweeper at the back. I heard a shout up ahead but didn't react quickly enough to
the "low branch" and smacked my helmet off the branch, which knocked the head
light onto the ground. Light back on and I sprinted to catch up with the others
as we headed for the Ring. On the way there I got a phone call from Phil who was
checking out the cyclo-cross course. Good chat to him about options but I was
riding one handed around the ring which meant the others had to wait up for
me. Phone call finished it was a sprint across the ring to the other side
with my Nuke proof cutting out on the way across (grrrrrr!). Out the other side
and down nettle lane (nice and slippery). Massimo was very cautious
here! Back onto the road for a quick sprint down to Shaw's, nice run
under the bridge and heading for the trees. I think somewhere around here I lost
my pump (grrrrrrr!). Nice run through the trees. Massimo still getting
used to the circuit. Up the hill and around the loop. Good climb up to the car
park. Neill then wanted me to go in front to take them around the car park loop
but I wanted to ensure no one got lost so I wanted to stay at the back. After a
couple of wrong turns from Neill I took over the lead. We all stayed (pretty
much) together with Stephen making sure Massimo didn't get lost
again. Back to the tow path and we headed for the Meadows. Nice run
through here, I was sweeper again. Back to the path for a steady pace to
Shaw's. There was much groaning from Colin and Davy as Neill announced that we
were going up cardiac hill. Only Colin was off the bike pushing. Nice
drop through the trees and up to the track. Neill left us here. I took the rest
through the BMX area and out the dip at the end. Colin was ready to jump over
the dip but Davy got in the way. All 5 back on the path for a nice run
back home. I was again at the back ensuring no one got dropped. Massimo was
finding his legs on the way back and took over the lead for a short period. It
was Surfer Stephen who was finding it tough and dropping off the back. On the
final run into Lisburn Colin went off the front with Massimo behind then Davy.
Stephen was a few lengths back and I was just behind Stephen. Colin went too
early! I went up a gear, passed Stephen, Davy, Massimo then Colin to take the
sprint home. Just not the same victory without Atomic, Pedals and Dennis. Colin
was pleased to get home in third. "I got on the podium", he announced when we
got back to the cars. Great night. Mild. No rain. Ground was wet. Pace
steady. Massimo did well. No punctures. Faces were covered in mud and smiles all
round. Looking forward to next
week. Martin |
Thursday 18 November 2010
The
tow path last night was the madness adverture I have ever had on a
bike. We had heard in advance of meeting up that there was some flooding
near Shaw's bridge. That didn't worry us too much as we could work around it
when we got there. What we didn't realise was the extent of the flooding much
closer to Lisburn. It was a great evening for cycling, mild and still. Perfect
for the 7 who gathered, Massimo, Surfer Stevie, Atomic Alan, Pedals Pete,
Adrian, Kyle I and me. Stevie had been down the Lagan in the morning in his
kayak and said the river was quite high..... We set off just after 7,
Alan and I taking the lead. There were some minor puddles on the way down and
indeed the river was high. Alan was setting a brisk pace, he hadn't been out on
a bike since the last trail quest. With only the headlight from the bikes to
light the way ahead we didn't get much warning when the first major flooding
came into sight. The river had swelled up beyond its banks and there was a
current of water knee deep running into the nearby field. What a sight. We were
holding onto the hedge trying not to fall into the water and trying to cycle
through it. No chance. We all had to get off our bikes and start wading through
the current with bikes over our shoulders. This breach was really wide and it
felt like we had to walk 200 metres to reach a dry part of the path. We
regrouped laughing at the madness of the power of nature. All back on the bikes
but it wasn't long before we hit another section. This time (most of us) rode
our bikes through it, axle deep, feeling the force of the current trying to
twist the handle bars. A real workout for the legs. This section did not last as
long. Regrouped and pushed on again. More of the same time and time again. We
got to the bridge near Lady Dixon and Alan lead us up and over the main road to
avoid the water under the bridge. The other side of the path was dry, for a
short bit (up to our usual stop area) but just beyond there was only water to be
seen. Stevie went off first, Alan followed with me behind and then the rest.
Another long section trying to judge where the path was beneath the water by the
distance from the hedge on our left. Sticking together to ensure that we stayed
on the path rather than veer off into the river itself. We hit another short dry
area, regrouped and then pushed into the next lot of water. Alan was driving us
on with the "well we're wet now, so we might as well keep going" attitude. At
the back of the group Massimo couped but luckily only his legs got wet. Close
call. We came upon a group of 3 riders. They were planning on heading to
Lisburn. We told them what was ahead and they (smarter than us) decided not to
bother going any further and turned around to head back to Belfast. Up
past the footbridge was all fine and clear and we picked up speed, however we
were all soaking from the knee down (apart from Massimo whose legs were fully
soaking). We got to Shaw's bridge. I wanted to turn up cardiac hill and head
home but Alan wanted to push onto the trees. We all went on. Into the trees we
met another group out cycling and exchanged stories. We had a nice run through
the trees but all the while my feet were getting colder and colder. The pain was
starting in and taking the edge off the enjoyment of the cycling. We pushed on,
up to the car park. I stayed at the back to make sure no-one got lost. Back
round to the car park and we started (thankfully) to head for home. From here
back to Shaw's was quick but not quick enough for me. The cold water in my shoes
was awful. We exited the path at Shaw's and took the road home. Adrian was
lagging and I stayed with him. To catch the others I thought it would be quicker
to go up Dunmurry Lane and home via the Lisburn Road rather than go via the
Ballyskeagh Road. (I later found out that that this is longer!). Pete just
called me as I was about to call them to let them know our plan. Adrian was
still fading and it took us ages to get back to Lisburn. By this stage I was in
real pain. I couldn't get into my car quick enough to get home. Teeth gritted I
arrived into the house, stripped off the wet clothes and got into the bath. Took
ages to get sensation back into my bright red feet. Once warmed, dressed,
fed it was great to sit back on the sofa and think of what we had seen and
cycled through. If only we had a camera or a web cam. The sight of cyclists
powering through the brown rushing river with no sign of dry land ahead will
remain with me for a long time. Can't wait to next week. I'm on ebay
looking at wet suits !!! Martin |
Thursday 25 November 2010
It
had just started to rain when we arrived at the Civic Centre last night. Low
turn out with just our (newest) regulares Adrian and Kyle (back despite having
to wade through water last week) and with a new addition Trevor "torchy", a time
trialler from Phoenix with his new mtb all gleaming and clean (this was only his
third time out on it). We set off with icy rain in our faces, Kyle and Adrian up
front with Trevor and me in behind. Steady run down to the metal bridge, the
path in great nick despite last week's floods. We pushed on further to the
footbridge, an obstacle that the group needs to learn how to ride up Over to
the far side for a quick spin towards the Ring. Trevor getting used to the
gravel climbs, the rain still cutting the faces. Nice spin around here. Crossed
the Ring, through the gates and down a slippery nettle lane. Pushed on back to
Shaw's, I was leading the pack down to the trees. Nice run through here, some
excellent climbs. Adrian was struggling and wanted to head back after we
returned to the tow path. As we were all pretty cold by this stage, my feet were
starting to feel it again, we agreed to skip the meadows and pushed on for
Shaw's again. Through the gate Adrian decided to go straight on and gave us the
target "you can catch up to me". The rest of us took on cardiac hill, Trevor
commented that it was well named On through the trees and
up to the track. Of course we had to take the new guy down past the BMX jumps
and out the dip at the end. Kyle couldn't get his line right so we let him try a
couple more times. Trevor declined, we both agreed that the roots etc would be
more of what Johnny B would be heading for. Back on the path, still cold I was
pushing hard to catch up to Adrian. On and on we pushed, little conversation,
buff up around my face to protect from the icy rain, on and on with still no
sign of Adrian in front. We thought he had left the path to take the road back
to the Civic Centre. Back to the CC just after 9 and there was Adrian with his
bike on the car already. He must have been going a fair lick. He told us he was
pushing so hard not to get caught. He has been holding back on us!!! Next week
Adrian is going to lead us around the route at this super speed !!!! Great
night out. Little wind, just that annoying rain. Not as cold as last week but
still cold enough. Looking forward to next week's run. Hope the predicted
wintery weather holds off. Martin

Thursday 30 December 2010
My
domestic arrangements were a bit complicated tonight with wife working, normal
babysitter in a house with no water or heating, I had to wait at home (my kit
on, bike on roof of car) until good wife arrived home. 7:40 I finally got away.
Lads had started at 7. I told them I'd head for Shaw's bridge but at that time I
didn't know where they would be. I decided to take the Hillhall Road with the
turn off to Giant's Ring. The group normally pop out onto this road briefly
before dropping into Minnowburn. As I drove along I thought "wouldn't it be nice
if they were on this road so that I would know exactly where they were and that
they would know where I was". Lo and behold up ahead there were 6 riders, at
least one in a Dromara top. Great. I pulled up along side and told them where
I'd meet them. Success. They looked a bit knackered. Alan had been driving them
hard from Lisburn. Also out was Stewart, Dennis, Kyle I, Pedals Pete and Raymond
on his brand new steed. Nice.... We set off through the trees for a
great run. I only had one working light on the bike as the battery I thought I
had charged up weeks ago was flat. It was great to be out on the bike again. It
felt like a long time since the last trail quest. The hills were tough as usual
but looking around the group were sticking together really well. The sprint up
the hill to the car park was fun with Pete chasing me all the way. My body was
screaming in shock after weeks of doing nothing. I then lead the group around
the loop but Pete took the climb back up to the car park. The one light I had
had given up at this stage. Time to stick close to Alan. Pete was doing the same
thing. Back out to the path for a fast run to Stranmillis. Again no one getting
dropped. We turned and headed up the Meadows. Not as much fun without your own
light but Alan was setting a great pace for me to stick to. Out of the last dip
and we had Stewart come through to lead us out. All back to the path for a nice
steady run back to Shaw's with Alan and me at the front. We had to get
up to Malone House. The evening was perfect for cycling, 7 o for
heavens sake. What a difference a week makes. Raymund and his new steed were
having teething problems with the clip ins. Raymund hit the deck twice in quick
succession. A few bruises but on he went up cardiac hill like a trooper. At the
top I linked up with Alan again for the light. That boy descends quickly through
the trees and I had a devil of a job keeping up with him. Out to the track for a
quick break before heading down past the BMX jumps. I missed getting Alan's
light and had to rely on the candle I was wearing on my helmet. Not good. I
called ahead to have Alan light the exit dip. This was great until I hit the dip
itself when my head was parallel to Alan's powerful front light. All I seen was
bright yellow. Nothing else. Naturally I wasn't able to power out of the dip. I
pushed the bike up blinking to try to regain some sort of night vision. Kyle was
the only other to attempt the exit dip but didn't make it this week. I left the
6 companions to ride back to Lisburn. I turned and headed back to Shaw's where I
had parked the car. I only had the candle on my head for light. It was eerie but
tranquil. What a great evening. Heard the strange sound of a chain saw in action
off to my right. At 9:10 pm this seemed a little strange. I suppose with so many
without heat someone was perhaps making use of abundant fuel Great craic. Can't
wait for next Thursday. A few cry offs tonight: Davy Y (dying
with the cold) Massimo (babysitting) Kyle A (in Cambodia) Adrian (no
water = no shower for him or the bike ) John McG (busted after going
out with the roadies earlier today) Martin |
Thursday 6 January 2011
First
run out of the new year. Cold conditions again. 0 oC to start with.
Only 5 out. Kyle, Dennis, Stewart, Adrian and me. All set off from Lisburn at
7:05. Steady ride down the path with me and Kyle leading the pack, Adrian in the
middle and Stewart and Dennis at the back. Stopped for a quick rest at the usual
spot. I took a moment to warm up the tips of my fingers. Brrrrrr. Kyle providing
excellent advice on how to keep fingers warm while cycling. Dennis and
Stewart then lead us off. I stayed at the back with Adrian. Adrian and I dropped
off the other three which left Dennis and Stewart making the decision to skip
crossing of the footbridge We pushed on for
Shaw's and then onto Stranmillis. The plan was to head to the Waterfront but
Adrian's front tyre was getting soft so we pulled in near the rowing club under
a street light. This was Adrian's first puncture. He was a puncture virgin.
He produced a tube but didn't have a pump or tyre irons. Not a great
start. The tube he produced was a Schrader one. Stewart tried to pump it up on
his 'big' pump but the double head was allowing the air to come out the other
hole. Dennis and I then tried converting our pumps over to Schrader, both having
never done this before. Mine failed to inflate the tube but thankfully Dennis's
pump came to the rescue. Actually we weren't really stuck as the rest of us were
carrying tubes with Presta valves in them but we felt determined to get this one
sorted. Finally Adrian was turning the bike the right way up. As we had
used up a fair bit of time we turned for home. Dennis and Stewart cunningly
avoided the Meadows and cycled back to the tow path. I was beginning to think
this was going to be the cleanest "off-road" cycle ever. We set a brisk pace
back to Shaw's. Thankfully Dennis did give in to my tutting and we all headed up
to Malone House. Staved of off-road action I decided to climb the hill on the
grass. I was going ok up to the "pain" tree and decided to return to the tarmac
for the rest of the climb. Much panting ensued. Adrian was the last up
struggling with the gears on his bike. We headed off through the trees, I
was leading the band up to the track. We gathered again to head back to the tow
path with Dennis and Stewart avoiding the BMX run. Kyle then me then Adrian all
made successful exits through the dip. Dennis and Stewart then lead us back to
Lisburn at quick pace. It was getting very cold. Adrian and I were flagging.
Stewart left at Hilden again. The remaining four made it back for 8:55. Kyle's
new garmin said we did around 19 miles. Great night out. Looking forward
to the next one. Martin |
Thursday 13 January 2011
Great
night out on the tow path on Thursday. Biggest turn out we've had in ages. Mild
evening, 10 oC, damp under wheel but no rain. Crackin night for a
spin. Out tonight were Kyle I, Raymund, Trevor N, Adrian (2 weeks in a
row!!!), Surfer Steve (first time out this year), team "The Losers" (Dennis,
Alan and Stewart) training for Sunday, Pedals Pete and me. Out for the first
time with us was Davy Y and Colin. They had taken part in the last trail quest
at Killinchy and were well used to the tow path run plus detours. At 7 we
didn't all set off, most of us did. Dennis had called to say he would be late
and he was bringing Alan's bike with him. Pete and Stewart stayed with him.
Surfer Steve and I lead the bunch on a pretty quick spin down the path. For such
a mild evening there was no one out!! Not a dog walker in sight. From the
rest stop Steve and I still lead the pack down to the footbridge. All over it.
Great to see another bunch of riders heading towards Lisburn on the other side
of the river. We exchanged the usual "right lads" greeting. We pushed on for the
Ring. Getting through the final gate we had to stop as Colin had got a puncture.
Many innuendos being dropped by Davy while he helped Colin get sorted out!!! We
were like a bunch of school boys All off again, cross the
Ring and then I got a phone call from Alan. Got those four to double back and
meet us near Shaw's. Nettle Lane was a bit slippery tonight. Now a bunch
of 12 we headed for the trees. Super spin around there, group working really
well together, I had lots of fun trying to keep up with Pete on the climbs. On
the return to the car park we met another bunch lead by John B and
Phil. We pushed on back to the path and regrouped quickly. Another fast
spin down towards Stranmillis. I got a shout from behind that Davy and Colin
were getting dropped. I stopped and turned. As we were close to the other
entrance to the Meadows I decided to slow down Kyle, Davy and Colin to get them
to turn up the zig zag path instead. Davy had some trouble stopping in time,
fell over and then I heard "splash". Quickly I reached for him as he had one arm
in the water. I grabbed a leg and pulled. Close call. All back on and we
met the others at the gate into the Meadows. I lead off and then held the next
gate. 9 passed me. Two (Colin and Adrian) took the overland route to avoid the
gate. I caught up with them at the Malone entrance where they were waiting. Alan
kindly let me lead through the meadows only to try to come up my inside on the
climbs!!! I managed to hold him off. After a short wait at the exit for Davy to
change a battery I was for pushing on when I heard the remaining 2 come down the
hill. The cable on Kyle's light had come out. Not easy negotiating the dips
without a light. Now back together we headed for Shaw's. Another quick
run. I was at the back making sure Adrian didn't get dropped. Back to Shaw's and
Colin's light had run out. Davy and Colin decided to give Cardiac Hill a skip. I
was last up the hill. Tough climb and not helped that the bunch waiting at the
top set off as soon as I arrived. Good run down through the trees and up to the
track. Everyone keeping together. Dennis and Stewart avoided the BMX jumps
again. Raymund was almost joining us but turned around and joined Dennis et al
via the path. The rest of us had fun exiting through the dip. All the pressure
was on Adrian who was last through (unsuccessfully this time). Adrian and
I were at the back again. We joined the others just after the steel bridge. I
then moved Adrian up to the second row, much better for him. He was riding
really well tonight. Met Colin and Davy again at Hilden. Nice run back to
Lisburn. The kids were out drinking on the path. Adrian and I were even offered
a can of lagar!!! All back for around 9:15 I was knackered. It was after
11 before I had the strength to go out and wash the bike. Great fun!!! Roll on
next week. Martin |

Brrrrrrrrrrr!
Cold one last night. 0 oC when we gathered before 7 at the Civic
Centre in Lisburn. Seven of us in total. Trevor N, Adrian (Mr consistent),
Raymund, Stewart, Alan, new guy Phil G and me. The others finding it too
cold. We set off along the tow path with Alan and me on the front and a
frosting of ice on the path. Thankfully it was only "frosting" and had not
glazed over. There was enough grip but we did take it easy on the bends. The
pace was steady aiming to keep all the riders together. Hardly anyone else on
the path. In total I think we came across one walker and two joggers. We did
meet two cyclists at the first pit stop, regular guys in sweat tops and no
helmets. There was not much hanging around. We pushed on to the footbridge and
crossed over. Nice run along the other side up to the Ring. Trevor N thought his
front tyre was going down and had dropped to the back. Stewart and I stopped to
check on him. False alarm. The rest were awaiting at the Ring. Raymund lead us
across. On down through Nettle Lane, the mud was hardpacked making for a fast
descent. Onto the road and heading for Shaw's. Great run up through Shaw's to
the trees. Great run through here, ground so hard it felt like tarmac. I was at
the back of the group as we headed for the first hill. Alan was well out in
front. I didn't want to leave him on his own so I raced past the others and did
my best to give chase. He held out and reached the top of the first climb first.
The rest were not far behind with new guy Phil keeping up really well. A nice
fast run back to the crossroads and heading for the next big hill. I sat on
Alan's wheel this time and picked my moment to go past. Well, I can't let him
get both king of the hills!!! All regrouped in the car park but again not
too much hanging around before we pushed on for the spin around the loop, Alan
and I leading the bunch. Back to the car park and I was impressed to see the
others not far behind. We exited the trees and got back to the tow path. I
suggested that we skip the Meadows. The majority agreed. Alan made a feeble,
half hearted attempt at opposition Nice run to Shaw's. We all
went for the climb up cardiac hill. Everyone got up this easily. On we pushed,
down through the trees and up to the track. Regroup and then exited back to the
path. Only Alan and I going through the jumps with Alan still walking through
the dip at the end. The mud there was solid. No hanging about we pushed
on for home, Alan and I setting the pace, quick but not hectic. Trying to keep
the bunch together. Adrian was right on Alan's wheel the whole way home. The
rest were tucked in behind. All back for 9:15. Trevor's garmin read 21 miles
with temperature of -3.5. Some cold feet and hands among the group. Glad to get
home and warm. Great run. Glad we went out. Roll on next week. Martin

A
lovely mild evening for a ride up the tow path. 8 of us out, Trevor N, Peter S,
Phil G, Adrian, Stewart (only rep from team "The Losers"), Surfer Steve, Kyle I
and me. A lot of cry offs tonight. Dennis broke his bike on Sunday. I had
thought that his BA Baracus skills could have knocked up a replacement from some
copper piping, brush shafts and washing machine parts but not so! We set
off before 7 pm with Adrian and me at the front until the motorway underpass
when Adrian mysteriously changed to Steve almost mid conversation. Hardly
anyone out on the path. Got to the footbridge and all crossed over. Nice run on
the far side up to the Ring. Kyle was setting a fast pace along the
path. Through the Ring and out the other side, down nettle lane onto the
road and heading for Shaw's bridge. Myself and Stewart were on the front of the
group and lead them to the trees. We seen John B' crew out as well. They were
heading for the tricky stuff. Great run through the trees and heading
towards the first climb of the day I was being boxed in by Trevor and Phil. They
opened a gap to allow me through to chase down Stewart and Kyle who also, I
think, left me a gap to go through Group keeping together
well. Peter S off the back a bit. He hasn't been out with us since October.
Heading for the next climb and I lead from the front this time, Stewart tucked
in behind but it was Phil G who did the chasing and was right on my tail at the
top of the climb heading for the car park. One to watch! We had gathered
up again in the car park to catch our breath. Off the car park itself, down the
forest path was a car, man and dog. A bit of an odd place to have a car. When we
cycled past he asked for our help to get his car out of the grass. The ground
was very soft, not sure of his reasons for driving down this path away from the
tarmac car park We duly helped him out and on his
way. We then had a great run around the loop, except that my chain was starting
to jump. Grrrr! We meet Bogues's boys again before they pulled off along
a path under the trees. Back to the car park with lots of heavy breathing from
the riders. We pushed on and exited back to the tow path itself. Peter S called
it a day and headed back. The rest of us set a blistering pace towards
Stranmillis. Kyle and Steve on the front. Steve using his TT bars! Adrian got
dropped off the back. We all caught up at the boat club and turned for the
Meadows. Stewart leading off and decided to go the old school way, over the
grass to the entrance to the Meadows. We got Adrian to lead us through
the Meadows using his route to avoid the gate. At the Malone Road entrance we
spotted a group of young runners out with head torches being lead and following
by guys on mountain bikes. Great to see more people using the trails. Good
run through the Meadows but I was having more trouble when my chain when I was
exiting the dips. The chain kept jumping out of the big ring into the middle
ring. Grrrrrr. Back onto the path for a nice run back to Shaw's. We all
took on cardiac hill (despite Adrian's protests). Tough climb as always. We
set off again with me leading. We always seem to pass the shadow people up along
this path. These are ordinary looking men who seem to stand about close to the
trees without dogs or lights. Glad I was behind a big bright
light!! Quick run down through the trees. Just after the 'hop' over the
rut my chain came off. Fixed and pushed on and up around the track. Regathered
and headed for the BMX track. Only Kyle, me and Phil went towards the jumps.
Kyle and I exited fine, Phil claims his exit was blocked by Kyle but at least he
tried !! and he was without a front brake which had leaked all the fluid out
before we got started (before 7pm). Stewart then egged on Stevie to set
at least an 18mph burst back home. Stewart and Stevie took off with Kyle, Trevor
and Phil giving chase. Adrian and I sauntered along behind them. The lads did
hold up for us later on and Adrian did move up among them. We got to the famous
left turn before the arched bridge and Adrian missed the charge and was shot out
the back again. Adrian and I then sauntered along again passing swans and ducks
sitting on the river, one duck's quacking sounded like laughter, probably at us
riding so far behind the others!. Stewart left at Hilden. The other 4
were up ahead. Adrian's light was starting to fade, as was his energy. We missed
the big sprint home. Heard Trevor N had lead the lads out before Kyle came
through to take the "win" with Phil on his tail. All back for just after
9. Great night, still mild at the end. Looking forward to next week and
to the trail quest on Sunday. Martin |
Thursday 10 February 2011
A
night full of incidents....
3 punctures and a ceased bottom bracket. We
had to push Trevor N back from Belfast to Lisburn.
But more importantly
one of the Bogues' boys took a tumble. Gareth Blair. Ambulance was called and he
was stretchered off. Waiting for an update on that one.
One another
point, one of their group had a space blanket with them (the tin foil type).
Really good idea. I'm off to see where I can purchase a couple for our
group.
Stewart
used to be the 'big pump' guy but has now dropped into the resident
photographer. Dennis was our resident expert, Trevor provided lighting, Raymund
(moral support), Surfer Stevie (pump action), Kyle (look out man), Phil was the
damsel in distress and I managed the site A real team effort. The
repair lasted to the Lockkeepers when Stewart and Dennis opted to stop and help
repair Phil's puncture again (he suspected the replacement tube was no good).
The rest of us (6) went on through the trees, Kyle and Alan up front, Trevor and
Stevie together, Raymund and me at the back. Great run through here. This is
when we seen the other guys through the trees. Thought one of them had a
mechanical as well. We powered up the hill and then turned back on ourselves at
the top. This is when we seen the emergency foil blanket coming out. That wasn't
a good sign. We went on as there were lots of riders standing around the
faller. Meet Johnny Dugan and pal in the car park. Exited the trees back
to the tow path heading for Stranmillis. Didn't get that far when the shout came
up from Trevor. Cranks really stiff. We could see the tread of the bottom
bracket appearing. Not good. Pushed him home. Meet the other 3 at the exit from
the Meadows. Dennis had a puncture this time. We pushed on to let Dennis &
co catch up. No cardiac hill this time. Big push back home taking turns with the
pushing. Close to Lisburn I relieved Kyle who cycled forward. I was on Trevor's
left, Dennis was on his right. We didn't think there would be a sprint tonight
as there wasn't much room left but, within sight of the civic centre, Alan came
around Dennis. I shouted to Kyle but it was too late. Alan had the jump and made
it home first. Good night anyway. Looking
forward to next Thursday. Martin |
Thursday 17 February 2011
Super
night out on tow path. We had Kyle, Adrian, Peter S, Trevor N, Davy Y and me.
Set off at 7:05, nice evening, still, not too cold. Lots of puddles on the path
but few walkers. Trevor N and I were leading the pack. Trevor pleased his bottom
bracket was fixed in time (he had split the last one!!). The pace was pretty
high. Over the footbridge and Peter S decided to call it a day. He hadn't
recovered fully from sickness. And then there were 5. We pushed on for the
Ring. Great run round here. No punctures. I was pushing hard at the front to
make sure Kyle didn't catch me. Across the Ring then down nettle lane (even more
slippery). Back to Shaw's then on to the trees. Nice run through here too. Kyle
was out front but went off the wrong way. There was no one left for the sprint
up the first hill. I was pushing from the front, feeling good. Adrian was
getting dropped on the way towards the big hill. I had went back to check on
him. All ok but that left Kyle clear to attack the climb. I did race after him
but he was too close to the top to catch. NIce spin around the loop. All keeping
close together. Full moon out. Perfect evening. Back to the car park and
Davy Y was beginning to flag and talked about heading back. We talked him round
and he followed us towards Stranmillis. We turned and headed through the Meadows
using Adrian's pass to avoid the gate. A great burst through the dips at the
Meadows. I was enjoying these. All back to the tow path for another quick run
back to Shaw's. We all headed up cardiac hill. At the top we heard shouts from
the grassy area on the hill. Lots of swearing. It was a football club out
training with a coach in the distance shouting at them. They didn't seem to
having half as much fun as we were. On through the trees and
around the running track. Only Kyle and I took on the BMX jumps and exit dip.
Very muddy. We both cleared it. Adrian didn't try it as he is too shy and didn't
want to show off his talents Another fast run back
towards home. Trevor N was powering past me at the front but I managed to reel
him in. Trevor and I had built up a big gap to the others. We waited at Hilden.
Davy Y left here. Trevor and I then kept the lead on the next stretch.
Under the bridge with the Civic Centre in sight Trevor and I were running level,
not looking at each other, not talking, just pumping the legs. Trevor had left a
gap to his right where I knew Kyle would be coming through. I waited and waited
and waited. Finally it happened. Kyle shot past Trevor on his right then cut
over to the left. I immediately jumped onto Kyle's wheel and then round him. I
buried it. Full sprint for home. Great final run in. 24 odd miles on the clock.
Back for 9:15. Super night. Really enjoyed that. Fingers crossed I can keep this
form for the racing next week (MTB). Martin |
Thursday 24 February 2011
7
of us planned for the Tow Path tonight but at the last minute Martin texted us
to say he wasn't feeling the best and would give it a miss. Whatever rocket fuel
he was taking last week (see last weeks report) must have hit back with a
vengeance ? Just after 7pm, 6 of us
set off for a quick one down the path - Kyle, Trevor, Raymond, Stuart, Phil and
myself - the speed was easily hitting 19mph+ and I think the warm night was
working in everyones favour. Down to Lady Dixon were we stopped for a brief
pitstop before heading off down to the bridge. All over and we charged off to
the Giants Ring. We stopped here for a few moments and then Kyle led the group
around the ring rather than across it, then over the gate. All through nettle
lane and then over to Belvoir. At the top of the first hill everyone
remembered to turn left at the intersection, down the hill and then up past the
football pitches. On the climb up to the intersection again, Phil noticed a
flashing light on the ground - an expensive one which Stuart was glad to get
back - good spot and while we slowed we passed pleasantries with a few PhoenixCC
ones who were heading down the Berm/Chute trail. "All up" we headed up Vomit
Ridge, no hanging about and straight on through Belvoir. Passing the sewage
works, somehow the leaders missed the turn and we ended up cutting out a section
of track as we backtracked and followed me back to the Car Park. The long slog
up the hill was brutal with Phil and I not letting either person get to the top
first, but it was worth it! "All up" and off to Lagan Meadows, a quiet whisper
said "Where's Martin...?, up the hills, through Adrian's pass and then "All up"
to go through the dips past the hockey pitches. "All up" was a phrase that was
slowly killing us ( me anyways!!). Cardiac Hill was tackled with gusto
(all up? Yes we were) and then through the tress and out the dip. All 6 made a
successful attack - first time I believe - and then it was the jaunt home. About
half a mile from Lady D's my heartburn was destroying me so I just backed off,
finally catching up to Stuart, Phil and Kyle at Hilden where Stuart said good
bye. The final section was a casual affair for me but Raymond and Trevor were
really kicking it with Trevor pipping Raymond by about 2 car lengths to finish.
Good job. Garmin for me read 2hr2mins with 23.6miles covered (subtract 5
mins for the whippets). Normal service should resume next week with
Martin. See you all Sunday at the Spring League. Adrian

Thursday 3 March 2011
Felt
a whole lot better than I did last Thursday. The tummy bug (or whatever it was)
knocked me for six. Nice to get back out again onto the tow path. Big
night for us, 11 in total. Peter S, Pedals Pete, Kyle, Mr Consistent Adrian,
Atomic Alan, Trevor N, Phil G, Stewart, the legend Bob Patterson, Davy Y (who we
picked up in Hilden) and me. We set off at 7pm with Alan and me leading
the bunch down the path. It was a perfect night, no wind, no rain, ground dry
and not too many walkers out. The pace was high, Alan hadn’t been out for 3
weeks and was buzzing from the ‘off’. Short stop near Lady Dixon when Stewart
and Pedals Pete took over. These two kept the pace high but the bunch stayed
together. Over the footbridge and we swapped again putting Kyle and Adrian up
front. This worked until the start of the trail around the Ring when Alan and I
took over the lead. Through the series of gates we went. We stopped just inside
the gate at the final run to gather up again before Alan led us onto the Ring
itself with me right on his rear wheel all the way. All gathered up then
sprinted across the Ring. Out the far side, down nettle lane. Bob concluding
that his brakes were more noise than stopping action. Quick sprint down
the road towards Minnowburn, me out front with Bob. Cheeky Trevor N then shot
past us (time trial training coming on well). I shot off after him and went
round him. Phil G almost came around me before we turned in towards the tow path
again. Steady run through Shaw’s towards the trees. All through, Alan up front,
me and Peter S at the back. I was too far back to challenge the first short hill
up towards the exit from the park but on the return leg I started to make my way
from the back and was at full tilt for the climb up to the car park. Felt good.
Alan was suffering through. Thought we see Bogues’ boys through the trees. Looks
like they had a big group out too. Quick breather in the car park. Peter
S deciding to give the loop a miss. He is still recovering from a long period
off the bike. Good run around here with Alan and Kyle up front. Pedals Pete was
then pushing us on through the trees. Alan couldn’t keep up with him so I
bridged the gap to his back wheel. Just before the aqueduct Pete turns right. We
normally go under the aqueduct THEN turn right. I yelled but he also spotted
that we was heading directly for the river. That left me to get back to the car
park on my own. The rest of the bunch followed shortly afterwards. All 11
then set off out the trees and back to the tow path. A quick pace down towards
Stranmillis. I was at the back with Davy Y. We turned and then headed for the
Meadows. I took over the lead to ensure that we all went via Adrian’s bypass.
Kyle was chasing me up the gravel path towards the Malone Road entrance. When
the ‘all up’ was given I took off first wanting a clear run at the dips. Enjoyed
these. All gathered up on the path. One missing. Peter S. Chain suck on the
granny ring meant that he was running-with-bike down the hill. Quick fix and off
we went. More quick pace from the front guys as we headed for Shaw’s. At the
bridge beside the “how much!” café Peter decided that we would check to see if
the granny ring was ok again. Big mistake. More chain suck. Had to stop to fix
it again. He decided to give cardiac hill a miss. Peter, Davy Y, Kyle and I had
to play catch up with the others. They were already on cardiac hill when we
arrived. Peter went on and the rest of us took on the climb. Davy Y was the last
up. We waited for him to say ‘off we go’. Stewart was off like a whippet with
Alan and me chasing. Down through the trees and up past the running track. Lots
trying the dip out past the BMX jumps and succeeding. I didn’t get it this week.
Too close to the tree. Then for the big push home. Alan, Pedals Pete,
Trevor N were really pushing it. Bodies were strung out all over the place. We
re-gathered past the steel bridge and stayed together as a group. However, it
wasn’t long before them three were starting to lift the pace again. More bodies
out, regathered. Trevor N shot off the front. I gave chase; we rounded a left
hand bend. I heard a crash ahead (but no splash). Around the corner I found
Trevor off the tarmac and onto the grass bank. (Going too fast!) Other riders
like Alan were almost on top of us. Trevor picked himself up, fixed the chain
back on and set off again. No harm to bike or man (well, until he woke up the
next day….?) The group was getting split up again. Trevor, Kyle and I
waited at Hilden. Alan came along and went straight on not waiting. We set off
after him. Bob and Adrian were bringing up the rear. Stewart & Peter S
peeled off at Hilden, Davy Y peeled off at Lambeg. The pace was really high
then. I was a long way back before I decided to give chase. I passed Kyle, Phil,
then Alan. I was bearing down on Trevor. Up ahead were Kyle and Pete. We were
under the concrete bridge with the lights of the Civic Centre up ahead. I was
still a good distance off these two. I was pushing hard and closing but so was
the distance to the finish. I really dug in, legging spinning, last change of
gear. I started to close in on them. The beam of light from my bike was on
Pete’s back. I was hammering at this stage and starting to make ground. As I got
near them Pete was swinging to the right to go side by side with Kyle. I
shouting “on your right”, Pete pulled over a bit, I went through, momentum high.
Left Kyle and powered on through the arches. Felt great.. Kyle’s comment
“I’ll get ya one day”. And he will. Great night, bit too pacey at times.
Thankfully no punctures and just Peter S’ chain suck issue. Hope to keep this
form for Sunday’s race. Looking forward to next week’s
run. Martin |
Thursday 10 March 2011
Bad
start to the night when I went out to the garage to find my back wheel soft.
Quick change (better in a garage then out in the open). Running late. Set off.
Seen a missed call from Alan who was looking for a track pump. Turned around and
drove back to the house to get mine. Arrived at 7pm. Dennis just arriving by
bike. Alan showed up about 5 past 7. Got his tyre sorted then off we went. 8 in
total. Dennis, Alan, Adrian, Kyle, Trevor N, Peter S, Bob and me. There had been
rain predicted but thankfully it hadn’t shown up. Windy though. Kyle and
I lead the bunch down the path towards Belfast, the pace was quick but not
hectic. Usual stop near Lady Dixon. Peter S having trouble with a cheap
mudguard. Removed and placing beside a tree to get on the way back. At the
footbridge we all headed over, Alan too eager to get over first forcing me to
walk over
Peter S then having problems with his light fitting. I lead the bunch on the
other side. Met three riders coming the other way. Blinded! Up towards
the Ring. I was driving hard from the front knowing that Kyle and Alan weren’t
far behind. All across the Ring, exit, down nettle lane. Bob’s brakes still
sounding like an Ulsterbus. Back on the road heading towards Minnowburn. Trevor
N shot past (again!). I tore off after him just getting around him before the
turn back in toward Shaw’s Nice run from there to the
trees. Alan lead off, I was at the back with Peter S. Too far back for a
challenge on the first climb but made sure I was at the front for the second
climb up to the car park. All set off around the loop. Had to stop as Bob got a
puncture. He put on a Formula 1 display of how to not hang about fitting a new
tube. A sight to see. All set off again back up to the car park. When we got
back we had another puncture, this time it was Alan’s rear wheel. This was
Alan’s 4th puncture in 2 days and he was all out of tubes. Bro Dennis to the
rescue. Bob into action again. Met up with Johnny Dugan and his crew who were
out as well. All back down the hill and back to the path. With the
hold-ups we decided to skip the Meadows. Steady pace heading back with Alan and
me on the front. All going well until we neared Shaw’s when we realised we were
a man short. Peter S was missing. We went onto the car park to wait for him. He
came walking under the bridge. Problem with gears. Bob and I stayed with him,
the others climbed up cardiac hill. Bob sorted it out and Peter S and Bob went
straight on to meet the others. I went up Cardiac to chase the rest. I only
caught up with them at the exit from the BMX jumps. Successful exit this time
through the dip. Bob and I were on the front then as we headed back to
Lisburn. Through the steel bridge Bob managed to rub against an exposed bolt.
Nice cut to the arm. Bob and I led the others again until Bob decided to give
someone else a go at the front to get out of the wind. Kyle stepped up. Him and
I lead the rest back but the others were getting restless, especially Trevor N
who wanted to lift the pace. I provided him with some valuable information on
doing ‘things’ prematurely. After all he had hit the dirt
last week when he went too fast on a corner. Kyle and I continued to hold the
others up past the Lambeg Road and all the way up to the bridge where the CX
course went across. I then said to Kyle, “ok, let’s go”. We lifted the pace at
this point. Kyle stuck it for a while but then dropped back. I pushed it on. A
light appeared to my right. I looked across expecting it to be Trevor or Alan.
It was Adrian!!! He gave me a run for my money before he dropped back. The end
was in sight and I thought I was going to get there unchallenged when old-hat
Dennis comes powering through on my right. I got out of the saddle to start
chasing, attacking him on his right. Up through the gears, pushing the bike so
hard the front wheel was starting to wobble uncontrollably. Teeth gritted I
drove on. This boy was not giving in. I came up level with him and then finally
started to edge in front. I knew I had it when I heard Dennis laugh. We powered
through the arches with me just a wheel length in front. What a great sprint!!!
I was well into the purple zone, never mind the red. Great night, no rain
but lots of mechanicals. We found out then about Trevor N, after all his
slagging about us going so slow that his chain was frozen, didn’t feature in the
final sprint as he had picked up a puncture as well. Probably from trying to go
around Kyle and me off the tarmac. He’d have probably blown up anyway Super work
out, 20 odd mile done, 13.2 average. Roll on the MTB race on Sunday. We’ll have to see about
next Thursday as it is St. Patrick’s day. I’ll send out text messages during the
week to see who can come. Martin |
Thursday 24 March 2011
Great
final night. Kyle, Adrian, Phil, Trevor N, Peter S and I met at the Civic
Centre where we were joined by David and Stewart (the (ex)-biker boys). Dennis
and Alan went out for 2-up training on the road bikes instead. Davy Y met us at
Shaw's after getting a puncture shortly after leaving the house. Peter S only
got to the steel bridge before turning back with gear issues again.
Great evening, bright, initially warm but with no cloud cover the
temperature soon fell. The cold mist coming off the river on the way home didn't
help either. Over the footbridge and onto the Ring. Great run through
here. After nettle lane we headed along the road back towards Shaw's. Adrian and
I on the front but I was expecting an attack. Kyle came rushing past with Trevor
N on his wheel. Kyle acted as a lead out man for Trevor. I jumped off the front
and got round Kyle but I ran out of room to catch Trevor. Well, he has to win
one now and again Met Davy Y under the
bridge. All headed to the trees. Davy Y offered to take us on a different route.
We agreed however the route was very rooty and muddy. Trevor N was not happy
We did
have to walk a lot of this section. Finally back out to the main path where
service (and speed) was resumed. Hammered towards the car park then off for a
nice loop around this. Back to the car park then back through the trees to the
tow path. Davy Y was struggling but, as usual, kept up really well. A quick run
through the Meadows, me leading off with Kyle chasing hard. Adrian at the rear
checking no one was getting dropped. All back to the path for a brisk
return to Shaw's bridge. All up cardiac hill with only a brief rest before we
pushed on for the trees, passing the shadow men and down the descent, Phil
zipping past me like a downhiller Up to the track, we
gathered in the car park when new guy Stewart's rear tyre when 'bang!'. Puncture
fixed we headed for the BMX jumps and the exit through the dip. Most made it,
New Davy got held up by Adrian who exited successfully. Kyle and I went
to the front for a steady run back to Lisburn but Trevor N was having none of
our tricks and pushed past. He blasted off into the distance. We didn't chase.
We kept our pace fairly quick. Trevor was not seen until the car park at
Lisburn. The rest of our group stayed together. On the final run in I was up
beside New Stewart. I wasn't sure if there was going to be any attacks so I just
kept riding beside New Stewart. Then Adrian starts coming past, shouting at his
gears which wouldn't change up. I gave chase but got to the front again easily
but with the lights in sight I felt the other main threats coming through, Kyle
and Phil. I floored it sprinting for the arches and got through first. It turns
out Kyle and Phil were more or less cancelling each other out with neither
getting the space to get around me (thankfully!!!). Great night. I'm
gonna miss these. Road stuff starts next Thursday with our 2-ups starting at Spa
Lake. Martin |
