Dromara Cycling Club member Anne Maguire is taking part in 750 mile cycle ride around Ireland in July to raise money for several charities including the National Council for the Blind.

A BALLYNAH1NCH businesswoman is to take part in it 750-mile fundraising cycle along Ireland's west coast.

(Anne Maguire. managing director of the Mlllbrook Lodge Hotel, will cover 100 miles every day throughout the week-long cycle, which will raise money for the National Council for the Blind in addition to a number or charities selected by the participants.

Anne's five year old grandson, Peter Kearney, who was recently diagnosed with autism, has inspired her t» select two local groups, which have provided valuable support to her family since Peter's diagnosis. She will divide her sponsorship funds between Loughinisland Cross Community Playgroup, where Peter has flourished, as well as parent support charily, PAPA Down.

She hopes the public will be encouraged to support her efforts for autism, which is the fastest growing diagnosed disability of children and which exceeds the combined total of people with multiple sclerosis, Down's Syndrome and Parkinson's disease. She is keen to promote earlier intervention for children with the condition, which often takes years to diagnose due to the waiting lists for appointments. Anne believes Peter's playgroup has been a huge help due lo the dedicated staff who understand the needs of autistic children and who work daily to understand their needs.

Anne, who is a member of Dromara Cycle Club, hopes that a recent trip she did in Majorca will mean she is in good shape for the 700-mile cycle, which will take place on July 7, although she admits the challenge is the "unknown."

Anyone who would like lo sponsor Anne is invited to contact the Millbrook Lodge Hotel in Ballynahinch on 02847 562828. All support is greatly appreciated.
