Tuesday 5 June 2012
Dromara Primary
School
As part of the Dromara Village and District Community Festival
which took place in the first week of June, Dromara Cycling Club was
invited to put on a cycling event for the local children. The
club have been supporting the festival for over 10 years and their
"Children's Gymkhana" has been growing in fame and popularity.
However
the 2012 event, which was held on Tuesday 5 June, clashed with another
local event which was celebrating the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, marking
60 years of her reign. On top of this the weather that Tuesday
was very wet which enforced a last minute change of venue from Dromara
Village Football Club to Dromara Primary School where the all-weather
football pitch was located. With a delayed start, while keys were
being sought, the event got underway around 6:45 pm with 37 young
riders turning up eager to take part, despite the rain.
Once signed on, the riders were able to line up and
try
out the six stations of timed events that had been laid out on
the playing field. These included a 50 metre
sprint, limbo bar, dismount event, cone chicane, ball and cone challenge
and ramp run. The participants were
issued with a time card to record their time in completing the events
which was filled in by the timekeeper at each station.
When
all six events had been completed the riders handed in their time cards
and the organisers had to tot up their time overall. Prizes were
awarded for the top 3 boys and top 3 girls in each age group.
After the timed trials the riders were then lined up for age
group races. With
the races over the participants were able to enjoy a snack before the
prize giving ceremony. A big thank you to Cyclezone in
Lisburn for the many great
cycling related prizes.
The
event would
not have
been possible without the time volunteered by the club
members: Alan Reid, Andrew Wilson, Bernie Monaghan, Brian
Wilson, Colin Roy, David Robb, Gary Gray, Lisa Millar, Phillip
Wilson, Ted McKibbin. Also thanks to Rachel Shannon and to
my mum and dad.
