Dromara Football Club
On
Tuesday evening, 7 June 2011, Dromara Cycling Club ran their annual
free children's event at the Dromara Village Football club. The
event is part of the Dromara Village and District Community Festival
which runs from 3 June to 10 June. It was touch-and-go whether
the event would go ahead as there were some very heavy downpours
throughout the day which seemed to be continuing in surrounding areas.
All around the football club there were large grey clouds in
every direction with lighting and thunder in the distance but
thankfully they stayed away.
There
was a slow trickle of young riders showing up with their parents from
6:30 pm with a larger group arriving closer to 7 pm when it seems like
the weather would hold. In total 56 took part, 28 boys and 28
girls. Once signed on, the riders were able to line up and try
out the six stations of timed events that had been laid out on
the playing field. These included a 50 metre
sprint, limbo bar, stop box, cone chicane, ball and cone challenge
and ramp run. The participants were
issued with a time card to record their time in completing the events
which was filled in by the timekeeper at each station.
When
all six events had been completed the riders handed in their time cards
and then cumulated at the other end of the playing field waiting for
the sprint races. Starting with the four year olds, the riders
were lined up by age and then, when the whistle was blown, they
sprinted as fast as they could along the
grass to the finish line to the cheers of the parents.
With
the races over the participants were able to enjoy a snack while the
time cards were processed. There was a prize giving ceremony with
prizes for various age groups which had been kindly provided by Lisburn
cycle shop, Cyclezone. The rain stayed away and the tired out
competitors headed for home around 8:30.
A big thank you to the Dromara Village Football Club for the
use of their grounds and club house and to Cyclezone for the prizes.
The
event would
not have
been possible without the time volunteered by the club
members: Alan Reid, Andrew Wilson, Anne Maguire, Bernie Monaghan,
David McClurg, Ian Proctor, John Clyde, Massimo Manganaro, Trevor
Wright, Brian Wilson, Rodney Stewart, Zak Hanna, Davy Young, Colin Roy
and Ted McKibbin.
