Cycling Gymkhana 2011 organised by the Hillsborough Girl's Brigade 24 September 2011 |
Saturday 24 September 2011 Excellent Turn-out for Hillsborough Girls Brigade’s 2nd Annual Cycling Gymkhana The sun beamed down on the playing fields at Hillsborough’s Village Centre as Hillsborough Presbyterian Girls Brigade celebrated their second annual Cycling Gymkhana. The event was run in association with Dromara Cycling Club, and attracted more than 80 competitors who arrived on bicycles of all shapes, sizes and colours. The young cycling enthusiasts undertook fun cycling skills tests against the clock and competed in a sprint race challenge. The riders were each given a score card to have their times recorded and at the end the GB officers had the mathematical challenge of calculating the overall time taken. Other activities included an adult’s sprint race (which proved very popular!) and ‘wobbly wheels’ where competitors attempted to cycle a wobbly BMX bike-the task proved too difficult for many! Competitors and spectators availed of refreshments from the busy BBQ and drinks stands as the late summer sun continued to shine. Prizes were awarded to boys and girls who came first, second and third in their respective age categories. These prizes were very kindly sponsored by cycling specialists Bikedock, who sell bikes for all disciplines and ages on Belfast’s Ravenhill Road. The prizes included funky frog-lights, a slick water bottle and carrier and colourful bells. Bikedock representative Trevor Annett kindly awarded the prizes to the happy competitors. Vouchers for Lagan Valley LeisurePlex were also up for grabs. All funds raised from the event will go to Oasis Village Trust and Hillsborough Presbyterian Church’s Project 180. A special thanks to Bikedock and Lisburn Borough Council for supporting the gymkhana, and to Dromara Cycling Club who make the event a possibility each year. Thanks also go to Hillsborough Village Centre for the use of their grounds and to Downshire Primary School for helping to promote the event. The gymkhana would not have been possible without the time volunteered by members of Hillsborough Girls Brigade and the many friends and family of the Brigade who gave up their Saturday afternoons to supervise and coordinate activities. Finally, a big congratulations to all the gymkhana’s competitors who demonstrated superb cycling skills. We hope to see you all again next year.
