Aghagallon Cup 2011

Sunday 3 April 2011

The 40th annual race for the Aghagallon Cup took place on Sunday 3 April 2011 at Bartins Bay, near Lurgan promoted by Clann Eireann. A full programme of youth races was organised with the women's race forming Round 2 of the SportActive UWA Women’s League.

REPORT BY STEPHEN WALLACE

Chris Magowan, Ryan Mallon, Gary Gray, John McGuigan and myself started the A4 race. Fast and furious from the line on a flat course with a strong head wind on the start finish straight. Fantastic performances from Chris..... (who doesn't know the meaning of sit in and bide your time  ) he made umpteen long breaks on his own or continually drove the group (with me cursing him every time he upped the intensity ) and also a great performance from Gary who also did the same a number of times. Ryan and John went well until they both had mechanicals. My goal, as it was my first open road race of the season, was to complete it which I did with reasonable comfort. The tactic was supposed to ride relatively close to the front i.e. within the first 20 or so and see what happens. Unfortunately from two laps to go I found it near impossible to get up to the front as the full of the road was taken over by the bunch (my lack of experience of open racing on extremely narrow roads). I went on Chris's wheel on the finishing straight but for me there was too much "traffic" and the placings had gone; I sat up. Gary and Chris contested the finish and as the photos show Chris decided on some Cyclo cross.

The view of bikes being thrown through the air and bodies hitting the deck reinforced any thoughts of the Noah being used in races  Chris and Brian McGrath (TVR) came down (Brian had a lot of road rash and destroyed his kit but thankfully was OK, Chris cut his knee but was OK when his mummy put a plaster on and said "there, there, there").  Great win for Mark McKnight.

In the junior race Christopher Weir rode very strongly against opposition that wouldn't have looked out of place in senior racing, a very credible 7th... well done. Not to be outdone Zak Hanna also put in a sterling performance to record 10th place.

Great result for Mary Hunter in the Ladies race, no team mates, but a hard fought 3rd, with Val O'Neill taking the win and Therese Smyth 4th.

All in all a "Made in Dromara" day

Great race at Bartins Bay. Limit had 3 minutes on scratch and we were not making any ground on them after 2 laps.  Attacks were started by some girls in scratch and the group was not working well together to make any ground on limit. Val started to move off the front and then Therese came up to her as well. I jumped on and a break was formed in the 3rd lap. We worked relentlessly to stay away and on the last lap really dug in to catch limit.  Kelly Donnelly from Spires CC came with us and on the finishing straight Val took the win from Kelly and I just managed to pip Therese to third place. An enjoyable race which was hard work but rewarding.
