Dromara Cycling Club
Awards and Christmas Dinner
Friday 3rd December 2010

The Temple Golf Club near Ballynahinch was the venue for Dromara Cycling Club's Awards Night 2010.  This was the second year in a row that the club were at this venue and, as before, the night doubled up as the club's Christmas dinner.  Overall numbers were down slightly from last year with the very wintery conditions putting some off from coming along to a great night.  Guests started arriving around 7 pm and around 7:40 the first of the prizes were given out.  First up was the MTB trophy which was again given to Drew Armstrong for his remarkable success in the Under 10s category this year.  Drew was able to make the dinner this year to receive the cup in person.  At the same time he picked up his award for finishing 3rd in the NPS league.

The Versatile Windows NI trophy for the fastest pair in the two-up time trials held at the start of the season was awarded to brothers Gavin and Chris Magowan.  The time trials on the Dundrum line then provided the next set of trophies, Crossgare Plaque for the most improved rider was awarded to Robert McDonald with a new shield for the most improved youth rider going to Zak Hanna.  The fastest overall rider on the Dundrum line was Ronnie Smyth in a time of 24 minutes and 1 second.

Ronnie was brought up again for the Fine Food Distributors Trophy for the fastest 16 mile time trial (36:57) which were held on the Hillsborough to Ballynahinch road.

Round 16 of the club league was the time trials on the Banbridge Road out of Castlewellan where the riders could do the 16 mile or 25 mile.  Ronnie also picked up the Maghermayo 25 trophy for the 25 mile time trial which he completed in 59 minutes exactly.  For the 25 mile time trial medals were awarded for the following finishing times: Gold - less than 60 minutes, Silver - less than 65 minutes and Bronze for less than 70 minutes.  The following riders received their medals.

The fastest rider completing the 16 mile time trial on the Castlewellan Road was Jonathan McBride who completed the distance in 43:21 and received the Balloolymore trophy.

The next award was the Harry Ferguson road race which was won on the day by youth rider Christopher Weir.  Stephen Wallace is a veteran in the club but took a great win at Annahilt to win the Annahilt shield for the first time.  The shield had been kindly  sponsored by Stephen in 2008.

The leisure side of the club was then awarded with Bernie Monaghan getting the woman's trophy for her contribution to promoting and attending leisure events across the country with Bob Patterson receiving the male leisure trophy mainly for his organisation of the weekend runs which he has been devising for many years.

The presentation ceremony then took a break to allow the guests to enjoy the 3 course meal.  Around 1½ hours later, Trevor and Martin resumed the ceremony by awarding Ronnie with the Plough Bar cup for the fastest hill climb at Begney Hill in Dromara.  Next up was Gavin Magowan who received the Weir Cup for the most improved rider across the season.  The club had received a new trophy, Downshire Trophy, which was awarded to Caroline Patterson for the top female in the open-racing.  Stephen Wallace got his second trophy for being the top veteran in the club league.  Ryan Mallon was awarded the youth award for his achievements in 2010.

The winners of the league were then awarded.  Caroline Patterson was given the trophy for winning the Women's League, Christopher Weir got a trophy for winning the Youth League.  Gavin Magowan received the Dromara League Cup for runner up in the league with the overall winner Simon Welby receiving the League Trophy and he also won the Dromara Race Points Trophy which had been sponsored by Nigel Sudlow.

To close the ceremony the painting by artist Deepa Mann-Kler was presented by her husband Peter Bryson to Stephen Wallace for his contribution to the club.  Martin Grimley then gave out his annual trophy to Andrew Wilson for the Dromara CC Volunteer of the year.

Once all the trophies were awarded the guests were able to enjoy the music provided by the live band.  At the intermission a raffle took place with prizes donated by the club members.
