Dublin sees Women's Crit Racing as part of the Halfords Tour Series 2010 |
Saturday 19 June 2010 Woman's Crit Racing Dublin City Centre REPORT BY CAROLINE PATTERSON Saturday was a lovely sunny morning for cycle racing. Louise Fullerton (Ballymena CC) had organised her dad Jim to drive a Mini bus to Dublin to take part in the Woman's Crit Race around Dublin's City Centre. In the bus from Dromara Cycling Club were Mary Hunter and me and we were joined by Therese Smyth and Antje Otto (both Phoenix CC). We arrived in Dublin around 2 pm and there were alot of people about already and we were getting nervous. Eventually we found somewhere to park and then we signed on and got our numbers. The atmosphere was brilliant and most of us have never done a crit before so it was a big learning curve. We went for a warm up to see what the course was like. I couldn't believe that we had to go over cobble stones and there was alot of them. There was a fast downhill and then a sharp right turn and then a left turn and then you were on the cobbles. It wasn't comfortable at all! You then a sharp right turn and you were still on the cobbles with a slight uphill. Then you were on the good section, the tarmac section to the start/finish area. In total there was around 50 female riders and we went around together for 2 laps and then the race started. Louise Fullerton, Julie Mulligan, Mandie Collie and Ciara Mulholland were riding for Cycling Ulster. The clock started and we were racing for 30 mins. At some point during the race my back wheel came off! I couldn't believe it! Thankfully a spectator helped me to put it back on. We all did well and it was a great day and it would be great to have a few more sometime especially in Belfast. The winner was Fiona Meade. Photos by Jim Fullerton REPORT BY MARIAN LAMB, CYCLING ULSTER Earlier in the day over forty women lined up for a half hour women only crit. Many of the women had never tackled crit racing before and on this course they had a steep learning curve. Cycling Ulster was well represented by riders from Roe Valley, Dromara CC, Phoenix CC, North Down, West Tyrone Velo FCC as well the Cycling Ulster Slane Cycles squad of Mandy Collie, Ciara Mulholland, Julie Mulligan and Louise Fullerton. The event was won by Fiona Meade. |
