Night Race Craigavon hosted by Apollo CT |
|
Friday 29 October
2010 East Link, Craigavon In a repeat of last winter's successful events, Apollo Cycling Team held another one of their mountain bike night races at the East Link site in Craigavon on Friday 29 October 2010. The club make good use of this short circuit for a number of events throughout the year but had opted for one night race this year. The club is youth focused and had decided to open up the event to include youth riders across all age categories. However the heavy rain throughout the day had, no doubt, put many people off attending the event despite the fact that the rain had cleared by the time the first races got underway at 7 pm. Sign on took place at the flyover with the racing taking place down below. In the senior race there were 13 male and 1 female competitors and they had to complete 45 minutes of racing plus one lap starting at 8pm. As ever, the organisers had put in the infamous climb up the embankment which was impossible to ride up this year given the earlier rain. The event was a great spectacle for those standing on the flyover as the powerful bike lights could be seen spread out along the whole course. As expected it was the junior sensation Matthew Adair from Banbridge Cycling Club who set the pace from the word 'go' and had carved out an impressive lead even by the end of the first lap. Matthew was chased by Myles McCorry (BikePure) and Michael Murray (Clann Eireann), who themselves had a great battle with Myles leading for 8 of the ten laps before Michael came through on the ninth lap which he held to the finish. Keith Abraham, also from BikePure was fourth ahead of Jason Henry and Camron Burns. The club had provided medals, cups and drink bottles for the winners. Many thanks to Derek King and his team at Apollo for putting on the event.
