Belfast City Cycle Mass Ride to Stormont |
15 September 2009 On Tuesday 15th September there was a mass bike ride to Stormont. as part of the campaign by Friends of the Earth Belfast to deliver a vision of Belfast as one of the top ten cycling cities in the UK. The intention was to gather together cyclists to head up to the main Stormont buildings to assist in the handing over of a policy paper by Andrew McMurry to the Minister for Regional Development, Conor Murphy. The campaign aims to increase the amount of cycling in Belfast to 10% of all journeys by 2020. In order to do this, the group has identified the need for an annual spend of £15 per person on cycling infrastructure and the need for a cycling strategy from 2010 to 2020. The cyclists met at the main Newtownards Road entrance to Stormont at 4 pm. Andrew gave us a brief overview of the plan before we all made our way up the mile long hill to the main building. After a photo call and short wait the minister came out to accept the paper and pose for pictures. Among the gathered riders were three members of the Bikedock Belles, who were there as part of their publicity drive before they start the Race Around Ireland on Wedneday evening. The three ladies also had two members of their support crew as well as Derek Armstrong, Managing Partner of the Belfast cycle store Bikedock. Also there were two other Dromara club members, Peter Bryson and Martin Grimley.
