John Beggs Memorial and Sean McGeevy
Memorial Road Races Saturday 18 April 2009 Report adapted from that written by Marian Lamb, Cycling Ulster Martyn Irvine (Team Curran Raacing) has obviously made a full recovery from his great performance in the Tour of the North last week when he took the John Beggs Memorial race today. Promoted by Banridge CC this event is always hotly contested.Today they were blessed with warm sunshine. The event was handicapped with eight minutes from the Veterans back to scratch. The imit group worked well staying away for four laps before being caught by the elite riders. For a while these merged groups worked well staying together for almost two laps until the moves started. A group of five which included Team Curran's Martyn Irvine and team-mates Liam Curran and Fraser Duncan and Maryland's Mark Greer and Simon Williams (Juiced Orchard) managed to break away and open a gap which was not to be closed. Irvine made an effort to do one of his famous solo runs but was joined by Duncan. This effort was enough to give them first and second place respectively. Simon Williams who has been impressive in recent events came in two minutes later to take third position with Mark Greer and Liam Curran taking the next two places. Gary Cranston (East Anrim Audi), another rider who has found great form this year took sixth place 2min 5 secs down on the winner. Shaun Gray (Juiced Orchard Wheelers) took first unplaced Veteran. The Sean McGeevy Memorial race run over the same circuit was organised for S3 and Juniors. As has often been t ecase this year in these events, the bunch worked well together with no-one getting away despite some attmpts by a number of riders. The race came down to a bunch sprint and after some deliberation the win went to Adam Raynor of Juiced Orchard with Newry Wheelers, Nathan Morgan taking second poition. Phoenix CC's Fergul Rooney was fourth with the remaining top six being taken by Martin McConville (Clann Eireann), Paul Smyth (Maryland Wheelers) and Richard Lyons (Omagh Wheelers). Also on offer on Saturday was an event for tandems. It is great to see Banbridge continuing to offer these events and more clubs shoud continue to do so. Michael Delaney and David Peelo added another win to their list of achievements taking first place ahead of Catherine Walsh and Joanna Hickey pairing with Phoenix CC men Andrew Fitzgerald and Denis Cormican coming in third position. Banbridge, true to form, also ensured that the Youth were not forgotten and there was a full programmme of Youth events on offer. Robert Anderson of Juiced Orchard was in top form to lift the U16 title with Clann Eireann's Ciara Mulholland and Ballymena's Aaron Swan taking the U14 and U12 victories. Many thanks to Nicola Oldham for the results. Congratulations to Banbridge on another well organised event. RESULTS John Beggs Memorial Race (7 Laps) S1/S2/Vets 1.
