Downpatrick Third World Group Charity Cycle
Sunday 26 April 2009

Report adapted from that written by Marian Lamb, Cycling Ulster

Downpatrick Third World Pedal Pushers drew the crowds today for their annual leisure tour despite the inclement weather. Dromara CC were out in force as well as groups from Slieve Gullion Wheelers, North Down and Ards CC to name but a few. Marie Boyle and her cohorts had everything in place to make it a great day out. There was PSNI support and civilian marshalls and routes to suit everyone.

The family run of 20 km took the riders on safe pathways from Downpatrick Cricket Club to the Villager Restaurant and back. This event was well supported by young and old. The main event was a 100km challenge to suit more experienced riders which took in some of Down's scenic spots. However the rain may have obscured the views somewhat. There was lashings of food for everyone after and during the event so no-one went away hungry.   Cycling Ulster would like to wish the group the very best in their fund raising activities as all the money goes to the Third World.

From Maeve
"Weather conditions weren't the best today - rain, rain and more rain!
Like many I wished I had worn my overshoes, full legs and winter jacket as I got downpoured on by April showers downpour. I had decided to cycle over, so I was like a drenched rat before the event began.
A good number of people turned up despite the weather. Gavin, John C, Paul S, Ross, Deek, BL, Bob, Peter, Neill, Nigel, Anne and James G.   The group stayed mostly together, Wallace had a tumble in pelaton, but thankfully landed on verge and him OK. The route, same as previous years, towards Castlewellan, turned towards Dundrum up a wee stinger of a climb, into Castlewellan.
My mate Anne from tri club got a puncture in the middle of the hill, I attempted to fix it but thankfully John the gent from Lantern Rouge arrived, like a knight in shining armour and changed it . It was a good thing too as I was all fingers and thumbs... and getting colder. From there the route went through Castlewellan, Bryansford,Newcastle, Dundrum and food at Clough.
Got to the food stop at Clough main group had long gone around coast, up Minerstown hills, Ardglass, Strangford, Saul and home. Route was 55miles total I think.
My feet were still freezing so I called it a day at Clough and headed back to base... for hot tea, sandwiches, scones. Some kind lady went home and got me a clean pair of dry socks (much appreciated) I dried out most of my gear- as knew I had to cycle home, while waiting on the others-
The Dromara crew arrived in together still looking strong and fit when they all came back to base. Good day out and good banter"
