Begney Hill Climb 10 September 2009 |
Thursday 10 September 2009 Begney Hill Road, Dromara The final event of the road racing season took place on Thursday night at Begney Hill Road in Dromara for the club's hill climb. The event distance was shortened at the last minute when a farmer started cutting the hedges by tractor which had then spread thorns across the road. The finish line was agreed and the riders started around 7 pm with Derek Hanna acting as the starter assisted by Andrew Wilson and Trevor Annett, the club secretary, waiting at the top of the hill with stop watch in hand. First of the 25 riders away was Paul Mawhirt who finished in a time of 29.96 seconds to finish 15th overall. Behind Paul was Caroline Patterson, the first of the two women, who was followed by Chris Magowan was finished 12th overall. Behind Chris was Paul Jess who set an excellent time of 27.50 seconds to finish 4th fastest on the night. The quickest overall was Ronnie Smyth was the fastest Dromara rider in 2008 as well. Ronnie finished in 26.54 seconds, just two hundreths of a second faster than Aaron Baines (East Antrim - Audi) who was third in the All Ireland TT Championships this year. Darren Weir was just 0.4 seconds slower than Aaron finishing in under 27 seconds. After the fun on the hill it was off to the local inn to toast a great season. Many thanks to all the riders, timekeepers and marshalls for coming along to this final event of the road racing season.
