Dromara Cycling Club Awards and Christmas Dinner Friday 4th December 2009 |
The
Temple Golf Club near Ballynahinch was the venue for Dromara Cycling
Club's Awards Night 2009. The night also doubled up as the club's
Christmas dinner and the 80 club members and guests filled the upstairs function room to enjoy the very
delicious three course meal laid on by the hardworking staff at the
golf club. After the meal the prize giving ceremony took place lead by club secretary Trevor Annett. The top table was bulging with 27 awards including cups both old and new, shields and trophies. The first award of the night, the Crossgare Plaque, was presented by Derek Hanna, on behalf of Wilby Hanna Coach Works, to Kevin McDonald. This award was for the most improved senior rider on the Dundrum line time trials and Kevin, who has only joined the club this year, had improved by four minutes. There was also an award for the most improved youth rider at the same time trails and it was Derek's son Zak who won this having improved by over 6½ minutes. This was followed by the Crossgare Shield which was for the fastest overall rider on the Dundrum line and this award was presented by Noeline Hanna to David McKnight who had won the award last year as well. Peter Jamison had sponsored three trophies including the Fine Food Distributors Trophy which was presented by Peter Bryson to Darren Weir, the Balloolymore 16 presented by last years winner Mark McKnight to Stephen Wallace, and the Maghermayo 25 presented by Davy Robb to last years winner David McKnight. There was a series of awards presented for the club's road races. The Seamus Downey Cup was presented by Ross Galway to Damien McDonald for best overall performance across the two races at the Glassdrumman Road. The Harry Ferguson trophy was presented by Gary Gray to last years winner Darren Weir. The Annahilt Shield, sponsored by Stephen Wallace, was presented by Michael Pyper to Darren Weir again. Nigel Sudlow had sponsored a cup last year for the best overall racer across all the road races and , unsurprisingly, it went to last years winner Darren Weir who has dominated the club road races in 2009. Darren himself had sponsored a trophy, the Weir Cup, for the most improved rider and he presented it to Damien McDonald who has had a remarkable year having only joined the club in March. Turning to hill climbing, the Plough Bar trophy for the Dromara Hill climb on Begney Hill Road was presented by Caroline Patterson to last years winner Ronnie Smyth. The off road side of the club were then honoured when Vivienne Crawford presented the Dromara MTB trophy to the young Drew Armstrong for his performance in the Irish NPS series and Championships. The award was collected by Drew's dad Michael. The club started as a leisure cycling club and a large majority of the club members participate in leisure rides throughout the year travelling all across Ireland to support other clubs and raise money for charity. This dedication to the leisure element of cycling was highlighted by two awards, the first of which was for the biggest contribution to leisure events (male) which was presented by Anne Maguire to Davy Robb and the second was for the females and was presented by Club Chairman Stephen Phillips to Bernie Monaghan. Awards for the club league was then presented with James McMaster presenting the Dromara League Cup to overall winner Damien McDonald. Trevor Annett then presented the Dromara League Trophy to the runner up Ronnie Smyth who had received this award last year as well. Andrew Wilson then presented an award to the Best Placed Vet and it went to last year's winner Davy Robb. For the 2009 season the club had introduced a women's league and a youth league. Stephen Phillips presented the Women's League Trophy to the winning lady Caroline Patterson who had only narrowly beat Therese Smyth by one point. In the youth league we had joint winners Matthew Patterson and Zak Hanna. Matthew was presented with the Youth League Trophy by Maeve Cahill with Zak getting a separate engraved award. The Youth League Award was presented by Trevor Annett to Ryan Mallon for runner up in the league. Martin Grimley then presented an award to Gavin Magowan for the club volunteer of the year as a recognition of his support at all the club's events. The ceremony was finished off by Peter Bryson who presented a new award in the form of a painting by well-known artist Deepa Mann-Kler to Nigel Sudlow for outstanding contribution to the club. With the awards given out the club members and their guests were able to enjoy the music performed by the very entertaining band. Many thanks to the staff at the Temple Golf club for an excellent evening. |
