Apollo's Wee Series Round 2 2009 |
|
Saturday 5 December
2009 Silverwood, Craigavon On Saturday 5 December 2009, Apollo Cycling Team hosted the second of their three rounds of mountain bike events which form part of their 'Wee Series'. The event was based at the Silverwood site as per the previous round and as per that round there was heavy overnight downpours which left the course wet and very muddy. The conditions on the day were dry and this helped to improve the attendance but the date, as before, clashed with the local school transfer tests which would have kept many of the young riders, and their families, from taking part. As before, event organiser Derek King and his team had worked hard to lay out the course which had a variety of routes for all age categories. First away on the day were the under 8s with a boosted line up of 7 riders for this two lap event. As before it was Dromara Cycling Club's Drew Armstrong who ran away with the result. Niamh McKiverigan (Banbridge CC) made her first appearance at these events and took second ahead of fellow club mate Charley Dunlop. The under 10s had only two competitors to do the three laps of the mini course. Stuart Dunlop finished comfortably ahead of Sheena McKiverigan (Banbridge CC). The under 12 race was another battle among the Juiced Orchard members with Ryan Orr taking his second win ahead of club mate Conor Boyle. In the under 14s race Dromara CC's Christopher Weir was never put under pressure by Diarmuid O'Hagan in this three lap race of the main course. In the under 16s race newcomer David Montgomery took charge early on and looked strong throughout. The senior event took place around 1pm with 9 competitors lining up among them two members of Newbridge Cycling Club who travelled up from County Kildare. Wendy Barry from the club was taking part in her first mountain bike race. William Forsythe (Banbridge CC) was not able to start the event after he injured his back on the practice lap. As per the last round it was young Matthew Adair (Banbridge CC) who took off from the word 'go' and carved out a tremendous lead taking a minute out of the rest of the pack on the first lap of the eight laps. Taking up second place again was the host club's veteran rider Fred MacSorley who knows this course like the back of his hand. Behind Fred was fellow club member Campbell Armstrong who finished third today and helped to repeat the top 3 as per the last round on 14 November 2009. Many thanks to all the Apollo members for running the event today. Let's hope we get a bigger field at the final round on Saturday 19 December 2009. Under 8s - 2 laps mini course
Under 10s - 3 laps mini course
Under 12s - 2 laps main course
Under 14s - 3 laps main course
Under 16s - 5 laps main course
