Carrick Cyclo Cross Race
26 October 2008
hosted by Team Madigan

Sunday 26 October 2008

On Sunday 26 October 2008 Team Madigan hosted round 3 of the Ulster Cyclo Cross league at Eden Playing Fields close to Kilroot power station just outside Carrickfergus. Carparking and sign on was held in the excellent council owned changing facilities with the course this year being moved to across the main road to a field kindly donated by landowner Nigel Dobbs.  The club had put a huge effort into creating the course which made use of the entire length of the field including the hill at the far end.  The course layout was clearly marked with sections for the underage groups, log obstacles on the steep climb up the hill and two small mounds of earth to give the riders something extra think about.

The day started off poorly with riders greeted with a sharp shower on arrival.  Thankfully this cleared just in time for the underage riders to start at 11:30.  The course was challenging for all riders with the recent rains helping to turn the field into a mud bath.  By the end of the underage races the heavens had opened again for another short, sharp shower.  Again this cleared before the start of the mountain bike support races which kicked off promptly at 12:15.  The line up included three riders from Dromara cycling club, brothers Gavin and Chris Magowan and Martin Grimley.  Martin's close rival Stephen Prentice (Banbridge CC) was not racing today as he had kindly volunteered to be the race commissaire.  Also in the line up were two Phoenix riders, Ed Boyle and Tony Mairs.  Tony hadn't taken part in a cyclo cross race since the Lisburn one back in 2006. Claire Oakley, XMTB was the only female entry in this group.

Once the whistle blew the riders charged up the hill towards the log obstacle and it was under 16 rider Matthew Adair, Banbridge CC who cleared the logs first closely followed by Dromara CC's Martin Grimley.  However, once Matthew had got to the front there was no stopping him.  By the end of lap one he had already opened up a large gap on the chasing pack which included team mate Paul Anderson and Tony Mairs, Phoenix CC.  The muddy conditions made the going tough especially along the bottom of the field where the water naturally accumulated.  Dromara rider Chris Magowan found the conditions too much for him and he pulled out half way through the race.  The leading 5 riders did not change throughout the 6 laps with the dominant Matthew Adair managing to catch and pass all other riders.  In the end it was Tony, Paul and Martin for the top 3 spots in the men's mountain bike race with Dromara CC's Gavin Magowan getting an excellent 5th place.  Matthew Adair comfortably winning the under 16 race ahead of XMTB's Robbie Lamont.

The showers returned this time for the start of the main cyclo cross race at 1:30 pm which certainly did not help the already poor condition of the course.  Given the conditions the organisers made the decision to reduce the number of laps from 9 to 8.  It was Mark Allen from Swords Cycling Club near Dublin who managed to overcome the conditions to take another win (he won the first cyclo cross event at Lurgan Park).  Liam McGreevy, Banbridge CC who had won at Larne earlier this month had to settle for second.  Vet Aidan McDonald, Apollo CT got third spot ahead of close rival Peter McConville from Newry Wheelers.

Riders appreciated the showers back at the changing facilities and the excellent soup and sandwiches.  Well done to all at Team Madigan for hosting an excellent event.  The weather conditions certainly making life more difficult for both organisers and riders on the day.  Thanks to David Ross from Team Madigan for sending the results through so quickly.
