Davy finishes 9th at Noel Teggart Memorial Road Race

Noel Teggart Memorial
8 June 2008

A warm beautiful day was perfect for Banbridge CC to promote the ever popular Noel Teggart memorial race. The race was held on the fast Banbridge, Gilford, Scarva circuit, with the race headquarters resting at Havelock Park. There was also a full programme of Youth racing to be held. First riders off where the cat 1s' and 2s', with the cat 3s', Ladies and Juniors leaving a minute after. Representing Dromara CC in the cat 1 and 2 race was Ronnie Smyth (the big 40), Darren Weir and Davy McKnight. There was also a crowd of top class riders turned up, such as FBD Ras runner-up Roger Aiken and Eurocycles' Ryan Connor.
The main race was very fast flowing, with the break going further away from the bunch every lap.
As the race was coming to an end, there was a very, very fast and tight sprint for 1st between Roger 'Dodge' Aiken and Giant Asia professional David McCann. At the end it was Roger who came out in pole position, Roger predicting this win with my dad before the start. Davy McKnight rode extremely well to finish 9th, and was described as the 'Man of the Day' after his aggressive attacking. Unfortunately for Darren Weir he punctured in Scarva on the last lap and had to pull out of the race. As for birthday boy Ronnie Smyth he rode well to finish in the main bunch. Well done to the 3 hair bears.

The Youth races had a good crowd entered, with over 20 riders turning out to race.
The under 12s' had to race from Havelock park to Gilford, which was about 6 mile (?) in which Banbridges' Mark Downey winning to the delight of the home crowd. A special mention must go to young Christopher Weir as he completed his first open road race. Watch out Darren, he could start to beat you on the hills!!
The under 14's had about 11 competitors at the starting line for a fast 9 mile race to Scarva Industrial estate, just outside Banbridge. Juiced Orchards' Robert Anderson beating fellow team mate Ryan Turner, a 1-2 for the Juicey boys.
As for me, it was a sprint for 7th between Dan Runciman and I to the finish, with me just pipping Dan to the post with a well fought battle. My legs are extra sore tonight, as I was away running yesterday with my school at the Antrim Forum.
The under 16s' had the usual 2 candidates fighting for the first 2 places, Juiced Orchards' Mantas Spirgius and Nathan Mehaffy. I am not sure of the full result in that race but will update you when I find out.

Well done to Banbridge CC for a well run event, and thanks to the weather for being kind to us!
