Cyclo-Cross
League Round 1 - Lurgan Park hosted by Apollo CT |
|
Sunday 5 October 2008 Dromara Cycling Club riders gathered on Sunday 5th October 2008 at Lurgan Park as the Cyclo-Cross season got under way with Apollo Cycling Team the promoters. The weather was a great chaange after Saturday's torrential rain, the sun was shining and spirts were high, even if it was quite cool. The Lurgan Park cyclocross course is classified as a fast, flowing and challenging track and yet suitable for even novice riders so there were no excuses for not turning up and enjoying cyclocross at its best!! Changing rooms and showers were on site, only yards from the car park and awards for cyclocross winners in various categories and kids races. Race conditions were tricky with some of the grass really muddy and the three river crossings certainly had more water flowing through them than a few days before. The under 8's got the day off to a start with 2 laps of the under age course, and Ben Hanna was the sole presenter for Dromara CC with a very creditable 3rd. Ben was very happy to be in the prizes (which was money, glorious money!) Well done Ben. The under 14's started after the men and womens' mtb race with 5 competitors at the line to complete 3 laps of the main course. When the whistle was blown, Chris Oakley (XMTB), Dan Runciman (Banbridge) and Zak Hanna (Dromara CC) were able to break away from the other 2 racers at the 1st turn. In the course there were 3 rivers (2 of which you could ride through and the other you had to get off and lift the bike and run through). Chris and Zak left Dan on the 2nd lap with Zak trying to get to the front so he could break away. On the way round the course, Zak managed to pass his (senior) club mates Maeve, Chris (Magowan), Andrew and Gavin Magowan all who had started some 5 minutes ahead. As Zak was approaching the finish, he almost managed to catch Chris Oakley but at the line Chris finished about 3 seconds ahead of Zak who was very pleased to get 2nd place. Zak's father Derek classified this race as Zak's best yet in the under 14's and hopes there is more to come. However, it was generally felt that if there had of been a couple more laps Zak would have caught and passed his dad. It wouldn't be long before that happens!! The womens' MTB race had Maeve Cahill competing in her first ever off road experience, enjoying herself but she was unfortunate to have a bit of a techincal problem (chain getting mangled!). She recovered well to finish her race. Congratulations Maeve, hope you stick at it!! Gavin Magowan, Chris Magowan, Andrew Wilson, Paul Jess, Ross Galway and Derek Hanna all competed in the mens' MTB race. They had 6 laps of the main course to complete. With Derek competing in his first MTB race since January 2008 when he broke his ankle. Derek was filled with nerves and was a bit shaky on it at the start but as the laps went on his tempo improved and he finished behind Ross who rode strongly to finish 4th. All in all, it was a great days racing and it was also a great start to the season! Cyclo Cross
