Dromara CC Club League - Round 21
10 mile time trial, Dundrum Road, Dromara  (map)

16 August 2012

Round 21 of Dromara Cycling Club's Thursday night league took place on 16 August 2012 on the Dundrum Road just outside the village of Dromara.  This round was a 10 mile time trial and had been incorporated into the Ulster Women's Association (UWA) Time Trial League.  This meant that there were a few more guests lining up to complete the distance.  The biggest challenge was not the distance or the terrain but rather the weather which was foul with strong winds and sharp rain.  Given the wet conditions there was a good turn out of 23 riders, 5 of whom were doing the event as part of the UWA.

There was a bit of a delay in getting started, as the start list was being constructed, which left a few riders feeling very cold and miserable.  First rider away was Kay Hack (Bann Wheelers) who was followed one minute later by Heather Gould (Phoenix CC) with Maeve Savage (Ballymena Road Club) going next.  The riders continued at one minute intervals with Marcus Magowan chosing to go last as per his wishes.

Fastest on the night was Ronnie Smyth who finished in a time of 24 minutes and 25 seconds.  Gavin Magowan was just 14 seconds slower with John Clyde just under 1 minute behind Gavin.  Fourth fastest was Anthony Quinn with Marcus fifth and Trevor Wright sixth fastest.  The fastest of the visiting women was Kay Hack with Heather Gould second, our own Bernie Monaghan third with Sorcha Laverty fourth.  Maeve was unable to finish as was junior rider Zak Hanna, who joked that he was nearly blown away!!

The times for the Dromara riders were then compared to their average times for the same distance.  Those who had improved upon their average times were given better points towards the club league than those who equalled or did worse than their own average.   Taking the maximum 40 points for this round was Bernie Monaghan who had improved on her average by over a minute.  Next best improver was Martin McAnulty who went 24 seconds faster than his average time.

Well done to all the competitors and many thanks to the timekeepers and marshals who had to stand out in the wet weather.

Next Thursday (23 August 2012) will be another 10 mile time trial this time at the Lurgan Road near Dromore.  See website for details (www.dromaracc.co.uk).

Timekeeper: Barry Kellett and Ivan Bradford
Marshals: David Hawthorne, Bryce Hetherington, Brendan Doyle and Mary Hunter
