League - Round 23 10 mile time trial, Dromore Road, Ballynahinch (map) 1 September 2011 The penultimate round of Dromara Cycling Club's Thursday night league was a 10 mile time trial on a circuit that had not been used by the club since 2006. Located on the Dromore Road just outside of Ballynahinch with the turn out towards Dromara village, this challenging route was also a busy one for traffic. The weather was good, dry but with a head wind on the way back into Ballynahinch. With the shorter nights the timekeepers were keen to get everyone signed on and away as soon as possible. Twenty-two riders turned up, including another new face, Malcolm MacDonald, trying out time trialling for the first time. First away was Ted McKibbin with Tommy Downey setting off 30 seconds later. After 11½ minutes all riders were away and the timekeeper, Derek Hanna, crossed the road and got ready for the riders' return. Fifth away was Gavin Magowan but he was the first one back. Fastest rider on the night was Ronnie Smyth in a time of 24 minutes 38 seconds, almost a minute ahead of Gavin. Chris Magowan was 49 seconds behind Gavin with Marcus Magowan pleased to have finished ahead of Rodney Stewart who's final run in to the finish was hampered by slow moving traffic. Aaron McGrady had a great run to finish 6th fastest. For the newcomers Martin McAnulty completed the distance in 31m 19s with Malcolm finishing his first time trial in 31m 52s. To see who made the biggest personal improvement tonight's times were compared against each rider's average. Martin McAnulty took full points for improving on his time from last week by 9 seconds. The next best improvers were Ted McKibbin, Mary Hunter and Zak Hanna. Well done to all riders and many thanks to Derek for timekeeping and to the marshals for keeping the riders safe. Next week we have the final round, a short hill climb on the Begney Hill Road in Dromara. Timekeepers: Derek Hanna Marshals: Nigel Sudlow, Stephen Wallace, David Chambers, Kevin McDonald, Report: Martin Grimley |
