Dromara CC Club
League - Round 7 10 mile TT - Dundrum Road, Dromara 14 May 2009 It was back to the Dundrum Road for Round 7 of Dromara Cycling Club's Thursday night league with the start line moved back to its usual spot away from housing on the outskirts of the village. There was a continuous blanket of grey clouds overhead with no glimpse of blue sky and light rain. After the very heavy rain last week there was a drop in the number of riders showing up for this event, some perhaps not wanting to get soaked again. Among the twenty five riders that did show up this evening we had one guest, Stephen McCambley from Castlereagh Cycling Club, as well as Ian Harrison who had joined Dromara at the end of last season but tonight was his first time trial. Ian's wife was watching and videoing from the grass verge. Also present tonight was Julie Watt who is normally associated with mountainbiking but has just recently got herself a road bike and was out tonight on her first ever time trial. Julie also joined up with Dromara and hopes to assist the club in growing the number of female participants. First away was Julie at around 7:10 pm with Ryan Mallon following 30 seconds later. Under 14 rider Zak Hanna, who had raced around Lisburn the previous evening, started 30 seconds behind Ryan. Eighth away tonight our recent road race winner Matthew Patterson who completed the 10 mile time trial in a time of 27 minutes 51 seconds which was two minutes faster than his time last week and good enough to give him maximum league points. It was not such a good night for Stephen Wallace and Derek Hanna who both returned to the start line by car as both had suffered punctures out on the road. Unfortunately two of the riders, Paul Mawhirt and Ian Harrison, who were both not familiar with the circuit, followed an incorrect map and took the wrong turn at the fork in the road. However, in terms of league points, all four of these riders still score. Fastest on the night was David McKnight with a time of 24m 29s which was 38 seconds faster than closest rival Ronnie Smyth. Ronnie was 21 seconds ahead of the other Smyth, Paul Smyth, with Nigel Sudlow just over a minute behind Paul. With the time handicaps taken into consideration second best improver was the newcomer Damien McDonald who was third in the recent road race and third best improver was seasoned rider Davy Robb. Well done to all who came out despite the rain. Many thanks to the marshalls Jonathan, Gary, Tony and Brian. Next week we are at Hillsborough for the first of the 16 mile time trials.
The table below shows a new adjusted times with handicaps based on the rider's 10 mile handicap. Well done to Matthew Patterson for getting maximum points this round (40).
