10 mile TT - Lackan Road, Ballyroney

Thirty-two riders gathered tonight on the Lackan Road near Ballyroney
for round 6 of the Dromara Cycling Club League. The event was a
10 mile time trial along the Lackan Road towards Castlewellan. It
was a windy evening to begin with grey clouds moving quickly
overhead. Trevor Annett was again busy sorting out the order of
riders with first away, Anne Maguire, heading off around 10 past
7. The other riders were let off at 30 second intervals but only
the first half managed to get away before the weather conditions
changed for the worse with high winds, driving rain and even
sleet. The line of riders however did not cease to continue
coming forward to take part in the event as the surface water was still
manageable.
When all the riders got away Trevor sought shelter in the parked car to
await the riders return. Thankfully the high winds and sleet
eased but there was still a light rain to challenge the riders.
Young rider Zak Hanna called it a day when he reached the turn at the 5
mile mark. Darren Weir chose to forfeit his own time trial to
accompany his son Christopher. First back to Trevor was Stephen
Heasley followed 4 seconds later by last week's road race winner
Matthew Patterson. Fast times were not expected tonight and this
was reflected when 14 of the 32 riders did a slower time than before
however 10 riders did improve their times and of those, Peter Swann set
his own personal best time of 27 minutes 55 seconds. The event
tonight was the first of the season to use time handicaps, which were
based on the last 10 mile time trial held two weeks ago on the Lurgan
Road, Dromore. When these handicaps were applied the riders were
then ranked in order of the "New time". Top of the list was Peter
Swann who earned 40 points tonight towards the club league.
Behind him were improving riders Davy Robb, Gavin Magowan, Kieran
Thomas, newcomer Paul Mawhirt, Derek Hanna, Chris Magowan, Paul Jess,
Andrew Wilson and Ronnie Smyth.
Well done to all the riders who braved the conditions tonight.
