Dromara CC Club
League - Round 3 2 up TT - Spa Road -> Seaforde 16 April 2009 A bright evening beside Spa lake was where the many white shirts of Dromara Cycling Club gathered for round 3 of the club's Thursday night league. With 40 riders showing up to take part in the final 2-up 10 mile time-trial, timekeeping duo Derek Hanna and Peter Bryson had their work cut out for them. The first riders got away at 7:10 from the car park at Spa lake heading for the turn in Seaforde before returning along the undulating road back to the finish line. There had been spots of rain on many windscreens on the way to the lake but thankfully the rain did not dull this enjoyable evening. The fastest on the night was the pairing of Ronnie Smyth and Paul Smyth. Young Paul has set the fastest time in each of the three 2-up time trials this year and certainly the change of partner from John Ruddell to Ronnie did not upset this young man's desire to be the quickest. Ronnie had made a great recovery from his fall at the Tour of the North the previous weekend. Well done to both of them. The Gibson brothers, Noel and Gary were next fastest but were over a minute slower than Ronnie and Paul. Thirteen seconds behind the Gibsons was Nigel Sudlow and Davy McKnight. Davy had also competed in the Tour of the North at the weekend. Sixteen seconds behind Nigel and Davy were the strong pairing of Ross Galway and Phil O'Neill. These two had last paired up two weeks earlier for round one and have again shown great strength to finish in the top 5. Behind Ross and Phil was solo rider Marcus Magowan who was riding without his cycling partner, Neill Currie, who unfortunately was under the weather but still came along to help marshall the turning point. Sixth quickest on the night was Brian McGrath who had teamed up with East Antrim's Stevie Baines. It was not surprising then that the winner of the trophy sponsored by Versatile Windows NI was Paul Smyth and John Ruddell (Ards CC). The trophy this year was based on the best 2 out of 3 2-up time trials and Paul and John had completed the first two in a time of 51 minutes and 29 seconds. In second place were the Gibson brothers with their best joint time of 51m 55s and in third place was the new pairing of Ross Galway and Phil O'Neill with a time of 52m 29s. Full details below.
