League - Round 23
5 mile TT - Dundrum Road, Dromara (map)

The
final round of the Dromara Cycling Club's Thursday night league took
place this evening on the Dundrum Road just outside Dromara. The
event was a five mile time trial from Guinness crossroads back into
Dromara. The event attrached 38 riders including 3 from other
clubs and one rider not attached to any club. Also out this
evening was another first timer, Neil Megarry who has just recently
joined Dromara CC. The evening was cool but bright with a
noticeably head wind for the riders. Derek Hanna and Nigel Sudlow
had their work cut out for them sorting out the start orders.
With fading light the first riders got away around 7:25 with
juniors Connor Mallon, Christopher Weir and Zak Hanna off first only 30
seconds apart. A small group of spectators gathered at the finish
line waiting for the riders to appear. First around the final
corner came Chris Magowan followed quickly by Brian McGrath. Zak
Hanna was the first junior back with Christopher and Connor just a few
seconds behind. After 35 minutes the event was over with Ronnie
Smyth fastest on the night in a time of 11 minutes 6 seconds. He
was followed by Stevie Baines (East Antrim - Audi) then David McKnight,
Darren Weir and Tony Hare (Apollo CT) who all finished in under 12
minutes. Behind Tony, Gavin Magowan finished in a great time of
12:20. Noel Doyle (West Down Wheelers) was 7th and Neill Currie 8th all
finished in under 13 minutes.
These times were then adjusted
based on individual time handicaps. The time handicaps help to
provide evidence of improvement of the season. Making the biggest
personal improvement on the night was junior rider Zak Hanna followed
by May Hunter then Ronnie Smyth. The other two junior riders
Christopher Weir and Connor Mallon came next followed by Anne Maguire.
Many
thanks to the timekeepers Nigel and Derek for sorting out this
"one-way" time trial and to Damien McDonald for his assistance at the
start. Next Thursday we are hoping to hold a hill climb at Begney
Road in Dromara. This event will not be part of the league.
