Dromara CC Club
League - Round 21 10 mile TT - Downpatrick Road, Ballynahinch (map) 20 August 2009 With torrential downpours throughout the day it was a pleasant surprise to see the dry tarmac on the Downpatrick Road Ballynahich. The route has an excellent road surface with a number of undulations. The hardest part of the course is just after the turn at Annacloy, as the riders have an uphill drag for just under half a mile. A total of twenty-nine cyclists took part in the event along with two time keepers, a must with so many taking part, and four marshals. First away at 7.02 was Anne Maguire who was hotly pursued by Ross Galway and five of Dromara Cycling Club’s junior riders. On a fast night, even though there was a headwind on the return leg, three of the juniors, Chris, Connor and Zak, all managed their fastest personal best times over a ten-mile course. Fastest on the night was a very determined Davy Mcknight with a super time of 23:07 and Ronnie Smyth on his new carbon time trail machine was just fourteen seconds behind. Both riders have been showing great form lately with Davy 4th in the Northern Ireland Road Race Championships in Carrickfergus and Ronnie 3rd in the Billy Stewart Cup at Derrymacash. Visitor Anthony Haire of Apollo Cycling Team was third with Gavin Magowan getting ever closer to the twenty-four minute mark in fourth, with the overall Dromara CC League leader Damien McDonald in fifth. The battle of the Gibson and Magowan brothers has been close all year with places being swapped, but this week Noel and Gavin triumphed over Gary and Chris. Seven riders were grouped together in the twenty-six minute bracket with Brian McGrath the fastest and Matthew, another junior, again recording a great time. Sixty-seven Dromara riders have so far taken part in the Thursday evening league this year and total membership of the club now stands at 116. Dromara Cycling Club wish to continue to encourage others to join the club, both to enjoy cycling with others and for the insurance provided. Female membership is now at sixteen, but there are many others out cycling who would be more than welcome to come along and enjoy the club camaraderie. Next Thursday we will be holding our last ten-mile time trial of the year on the Lurgan Road Dromore, starting at 6.50 pm. 10 mile time trial
