Dromara CC Club
League - Round 19
10 mile TT - Spa Lake (map)
6 August 2009
Round
19 of Dromara Cycling Club's Thursday night league was held beside the
tranquil Spa lake just outside Ballynahinch. The evening was
perfect for cycling, dry with little wind. Thirty-eight riders
gathered including two guests from other clubs, five women, five
juniors and three father and son pairs. Davy Robb and Peter
Bryson sorted out the running order and the first riders got underway
around 7:20 pm. First away were some of the juniors including Zak
Hanna, Ryan Mallon and Christopher Weir all separated by one minute
intervals. The route took the riders out the 5 mile stretch
towards Seaforde before turning at the junction and returning back to
the lake as quickly as possible. The return leg on this route
proving to be tough both mentally and physically.
Fastest on the
night was, unsurprisingly, our cat 1 rider David McKnight in a time of
23 minutes and 10 seconds . Behind David were club mates Darren
Weir and Ronnie Smyth. Behind these three was Cathal Smyth from
Phoenix Cycling Club, Nigel Sudlow and Marcus Magowan. Ross
Galway had a great event to finish 7th overall with a great finish just
pipping Derek Hanna to the line, Derek having started one minute ahead
of Ross.
Using
the time handicaps which have been
modified throughout the duration of the league, it was found that both
Christopher Weir and Zak Hanna had continued to improve
their times with tonights finish being the quickest all year.
After the handicaps were
applied it was found that Christopher got the maximum 40 points with
Zak finishing second. Christopher's times for completing 10 mile
trials have steadily dropped throughout the year from just below 38
minutes (37:58) to tonight's time of just over 32 minutes (32:07).
Well done Christopher.
Many thanks to the timekeepers and
marshalls. Next week we are hosting the Harry Ferguson Cup Road
Race starting from the Harry Ferguson Memorial Site on the
Magheraconluce Road.

* Handicaps based on the average 10 mile time trial time
minus 20 minutes. For those with an asterisk, the handicaps were
taken from 2008. For those with a #, their handicaps were worked
out by using the 10 mile equivalent time tonight and taking off 20
minutes.
