Dromara CC Club
League - Round 18 Road Race - Anahilt Triangle (map) 30 July 2009 On Thursday 30 July 2009 Dromara Cycling Club held a road race at Anahilt which was the 18th round of their Thursday night club league. There was a large gathering of over 50 club members and guests enjoying the fine summers evening. Trevor Annett, club secretary, was busy putting the riders into starting groups. After the marshals were briefed and deployed, the first of the riders lined up at the start line. In the first group were two juniors and one adult acting as chaparone. They had two laps of the circuit to complete and started just before 7:30 pm. Three minutes behind the first group the second group got underway which included three juniors who also had two laps to complete. Behind group 2 were all the other adults split up into groups and who had 3 laps of the 8 mile circuit to complete. In total there were six groups with the 'scratch group' of 8 riders starting 14 minutes behind the first group. The scratch group had made up the ground easily to be just behind the other groups going into the second lap. By the end of the second lap group 3 had caught and passed groups 1 and 2 apart from newcomer Anne Wilson who managed to stay with group 3. Less than 30 seconds behind group 3 was a large field containing riders from groups 4, 5 and 6. The junior race then ended with a very close finish between Banbridge rider James Curry and our own club member Zak Hanna with James just pipping Zak by less than the width of a tyre. Right behind Zak in 3rd place was Christopher Weir. The spectators had lined up to watch an eagerly awaited bunch sprint and they were not disappointed when four of the scratch group riders, Darren Weir, David McKnight, Ronnie Smyth and Stevie Baines battling it out as they raced towards the line. In the end it was a clear victory for Darren Weir whose outstretched arms are becoming a familiar sight at club races. Behind Darren came Ronnie Smyth, Simon Curry and David McKnight. Many thanks to all the marshals for doing a good job and to the riders for coming along to enjoy bicycle racing. Next week we are returing to time trials with the 10 mile TT at Spa.
