Road Race - Glassdrumman Road (map)

With a day when there was thunder, lighting and heavy showers in Belfast, North Down and across many part of Northern Ireland, tonight's cycling event was expected to be a wash out.  It was still raining as the riders approached the Glassdrumman / Old Ballynahinch Road but just before 7 pm the rain stopped and thankfully it stayed dry for the event.  Twenty nine riders gathered for a road race around this short circuit among them 3 junior riders who had to complete 5 laps of the 2.25 mile loop.  The youth riders started alongside the 5 adults in group 3 with the majority of the adults having to complete 10 laps of the circuit.  Under 14 star Zak Hanna managed to keep up with the adults for four of his five laps and finished almost 5 minutes ahead of club mate Christopher Weir.  

The adults race was broken into 5 groups with the 3 man scratch group starting four minutes after the first group.  The groupings and time gaps were devised by club secretary Trevor Annett and proved to be a little confusing for the two timekeepers Derek Hanna and Ronnie Smyth who both chose to sit out tonight's race as they were due to compete in the upcoming Porataferry 3 day stage race at the weekend.   Trevor was racing in Group 1 who had a two minute handicap but only had to complete 8 laps.  In Trevor's group was Antje Otto, completing with the club for the first time this season and Davy Robb.  Davy and Trevor just managed to hold off the scratch group containing David McKnight, Darren Weir and Damien McDonald to finish first and second respectively.  Damien McDonald raced ahard of David and Darren to finish third with Darren coming in just ahead of David.  There was only one rider who did not finish tonight's race and that was Paul Jess who suffered a broken gear cable and had to retire after completing 7 laps.
