Dromara CC Club
League - Round 12 Road Race - Drumaroad 18 June 2009 Heavy showers had swept the country through most of Thursday but by the evening some blue skies had appeared and 35 riders from Dromara Cycling Club decided to go ahead with the planned road race which was the 12th event in the 2009 club league. The venue was the 6 mile Drumaroad circuit which was also the 12th event last year. Looking back to last year it was a better night but the club had only half the number of participants which is a good measure of the rapid growth of the club this year. The riders were split into four starting groups after Trevor, Nigel and Stephen had sorted out the time handicaps. Among the riders were two juniors,Chris Weir and Connor Mallon, who competed over 2 laps of the circuit. Chris won by just under 2 minutes. The senior riders had 4 laps to complete in an evening which thankfully stayed reasonable dry if a bit windy. With the Newry 3 day event at the weekend Ronnie Smyth had chosen to marshall and Darren Weir was "taking it easy". This left Davy McKnight to set a charge from the off with hardly anyone to hold his wheel however a few did including the young talent Matthew Patterson and promising newcomer Damien McDonald but, most surprising, was Michael Pyper who had an excellent race finishing second. Many thanks to all the marshalls who kept the course save among whom was Paul Smyth who won this event last year and seems to have recovered from his fall the previous week.
