Dromara CC Club
League - Round 11 10 mile time trial - Gall Bog Road 11 June 2009 A pleasant warm evening greeted the many cyclists who had gathered at the crossroads at the end of the Gall Bog Road. This was the 11th round of Dromara Cycling Club's Thursday night league with almost all the top riders in the league in attendance. The Gall Bog Road is a difficult circuit to manage in terms of marshalls but fortunately there were enough volunteers from the club as well as the very generous assistance from five riders from West Down Wheelers who worked as one unit to cover one of the busy crossroads. Thanks guys! With so many signed on it was decided to have only 30 second time gaps between riders. This, however, did confuse many of the riders who had got accustomed to the one minute gaps and as such many had missed their time slots. Peter Bryson had his work cut out for him managing the many riders. Peter was assisted by John Ruddell (Ards CC) who supported the riders in their start positions. Half way through the dispatch of the riders the starters got word that young Paul Smyth from the club had fell off his bike just around the corner. Luckily it was a low speed fall and when members of the club got to him a motorist had already stopped to lend assistance. He had suffered cuts to his chin and legs. An ambulance was called, which arrived promptly, and Paul was taken to hospital to be checked out. We all wish Paul a speedy recovery. In a separate incident, some of the participants had witnessed a car accident on a bend further up the road. Fortunately no one was injured. Towards the end of the evening, when many of the riders had returned to their cars a large flat bed lorry decided to do a u-turn at the crossroads. Club members were kept busy managing the other vehicles on the road. With all this going on, Martin did not get time to take many photos. Also, unfortunately in all the confusion a few of the riders' times were lost including those of Chris Magowan, Stewart Moore and Nathan Proctor. All three riders will be credited with 25 league points.
Well done Christopher Weir for getting maximum points. Christopher's time handicap was based on Round 6 when he did the 10 mile time trial in 37 minutes and 58 seconds and therefore tonight he managed to complete the same distance in 3 minutes and 36 seconds less time. Kevin's time was based on round 7 when he did the 10 miles in 32:46 and therefore he was 2 minutes and 22 seconds quicker this evening. Young Connor was 2 minutes 10 seconds then his previous 10 mile time trial at round 7.
