Dromara CC Club
League - Round 10 Hill Climb - Dree Hill 4 June 2009 Round 9 of the Dromara Cycling Club league took place on Thursday 4th June 2009 on Dree Hill in the shadow of Slieve Croob, close to Dromara. The event was a one-mile hill climb, sponsored by our cat 1 open racer David McKnight. To give all a chance to win, David decided the trophy should be awarded to the fastest rider on the night, who does not take part in open racing or has a Cycling Ireland race licence. On a sunny but cool evening thirty-one Dromara CC and two riders from Phoenix CC entered the event. Peter Jamison sent each rider off at one-minute intervals, with Trevor Annett recording their finishing time and also having the luxury of time to take some photographs. Fastest on the night was Phoenix cc rider Cathal Smyth at 5 minutes and nine seconds, or 11.65 mph. Dromara rider Ronnie Smyth was second at 5.12, Paul Smyth at 5.23 and Fergus Ronney Phoenix cc at 5.40. All the first four holding open race licences. The winner of the trophy was a surprised Damien McDonald, who has only joined the club and is showing great promise. Ross Galway, Dromara’s top mountain bike rider, came a very close 6th at 5.54, with our first junior rider Matthew Patterson just one second behind, even with a broken rear wheel spoke. Two ladies took part with Therese Smyth at 7.11 getting the better of Caroline Patterson at 7.36. As the riders gathered at the finish line the chorus of encouragement grew louder for all the later starters, especially for Andrew Wilson and Ian Harrison who found the climb very tough.
