Dromara CC Club League Round 4 Road Race - Old Belfast Road, Blacks Lane, Glassdrumman Road, Ballynahinch (2.24 mile circuit) |
|
1 May 2008 Twenty-eight riders gathered for tonight's road race, the first of the season for Dromara Cycling Club and the fourth event in the club's 2008 calendar. The venue was the Old Belfast Road, Blacks Lane, Glassdrumman Road triangle just north of Ballynahinch. (map) The sharp showers had disappeared for the start of the race but reappeared around the middle of the race to give both riders and spectators a good soaking. Other than the mechanical and physical problems experienced by some riders, the rain had helped a good few others to decide to call it a day with only 14 senior riders out of a possible 23 completing the 10 lap circuit. Thankfully the final laps were without rain for those 14 and it was MTB legend Ross Galway who finished first almost a minute ahead of the chasing pack. Well done Ross. The race was handicapped and riders were placed into starting groups. Details of the time handicaps are given in the table below. Derek Hanna and Stephen Phillips had a hard task of timekeeping this event with riders appearing almost constantly around the Glassdrumman/Old Belfast Road corner. Many thanks Deek and Stephen. The juniors completed 5 laps with Zak Hanna taking the honours.
Ross Galway's first race and he notches up a win. No doubt the race organisers will be adjusting his handicap for future races.
Other riders who did not complete the course were:
Timekeepers: Derek Hanna and Stephen Phillips Marshalls: Bill McKelvey and father, Paul Green, Davy McKnight and Mrs Weir, Ann Annett Photography: Martin Grimley Road Cleaning: Nigel Sudlow spent time brushing the corner at Old Belfast Road / Glassdrumman Road both before and during the race !! |
