Round 17
Harry Ferguson Memorial Road Race - (2.86 mile circuit)
|
|
21 August 2008
After 3 missed weeks of club league cycling
it was great to get back out on a Thursday night with the club, and what
a great event to come back to. This is only the second year that Dromara
Cycling Club have been competing for the Harry Ferguson Memorial Cup and
it was back to the Magheraconluce triangle circuit (map) which
turned out to be quite a bit harder than most riders thought (or remembered)
. Thirty-two riders signed on in the newly opened car park
beside the Memorial Garden and the weather on arrival was great, especially
given the heavy downpours of late. This was Dromara Cycling Club's
17th event in the club's 2008 calendar and the evening's racing started
around 7:15 after the team of timekeepers worked out the time handicaps. We
were joined this evening by seven cyclists from other clubs including Roger
Aiken (Banbridge CC) who is due to compete in the Tour of Ireland next week
and Sean Downey (Banbridge CC) who will be competing in the Junior Euro Championships
next month. Dromara CC wish both riders every success. Also
tonight we had a group of spectators from the Harry Ferguson Celebration
Committee including George Cormie who took video footage of the race.
The race had barely got under way when Davy Robb had a mechanical failure
(rear derailleur broke) on the first hill. With a few more drop outs
as the race went on we ended up with 27 finishers. Darren Weir took
the honours in a close bunch sprint and he expressed his joy at crossing
the line first with a loud roar, a real gutsy performance from Darren after
a long recovery period from injury. Hot on Darren's heals were Fergus
Rooney (Phoenix CC) and Ronnie Smyth, Darren's team mate and main rival.
The cup was presented to Darren from a member of the Celebration Committee,
Eric Jess, with a press photographer there to capture the moment for the
local paper. Many thanks to all the marshalls and timekeepers who helped
out, especially to Martin Downey for doing a great job volunteering as a motorcycle
marshall.
