10 July 2008
A horrible wet evening and as I drove down I expected to see perhaps 10 brave
riders. What a shock to see 28 dripping wet cyclists milling around
the junction of the Knockgorm Road and the beautifully named 'Gall Bog Road'
eager to stretch their legs along the undulating stretch of road towards
Dromara (see map). The
road surface was perfect for much of the route but the quality took a down-turn
through the village of Killanen. The event took place shortly after
7 pm with the first 6 riders getting away without problems but then Peter
Swann, and one minute later Alan McMullan, came back to the start line informing
the gathered cyclists of a herd of cows that were being transferred across
the road ! Nigel coped well and got the cyclists slotted back
into line and the event continued, all be it with a 2 minute time hole in
the middle ! Well done to all those who braved the conditions ! Apologies
for the lack of photographs but due to the weather, timekeeping became a
two man job and I got the comfortable role of sitting in the car and writing
down the times that Nigel called out. A special mention for Derek Hanna
who took 1 minute 43 seconds out of last weeks time. Not bad for a
man who just turned 40 today !! One of his birthday presents was a
nice new 'pointy' time trial helmet.
