SUNDAY 5TH NOVEMBER 2006
Dromara Cycling Club invite riders and spectators to the majestic surroundings of Lisburn |Island Centre and Lagan Tow Path for round 3 of the Ulster Cyclo-Cross winter league.
Cyclo-Cross is a race using a mixture of grass, woodlands, tarmac and cinder paths. Obstacles are placed on the fast sections to make the rider’s dismount and run over, a great place to watch the skilled riders.
The course is 1.25 mile long and almost flat except for a short climb leading to a bridge over the Lagan. The start will be on a wide flat field narrowing after around 300 yards. At the Island centre you cross a second bridge before running up a flight of steps to finish you lap.
Modified road bikes are used to provide extra clearance to prevent wheels binding with leaves etc. Mountain bikes are used by the under16’s and there are many who will use them in the adult race.
The under 16 race begins at 12 noon, with 5 ages groups, some as young as 8, in a mass start, but each racing a different number of laps. This is a time keepers nightmare, but great to watch.
The senior race begins at 1.30 pm, again with a mass start of 60 or more riders, competing or 10 laps of the fast flowing course. All riders will finish on the same lap, so some will only complete 6 laps.
Riders from all over Northern Ireland and from as far as Dublin will be taking part, as selection for the 2008 Olympics, to be held in China, will be finalised next year.
Cash prizes will be awarded to all categories including ladies so come along and have a go or just cheer on the competitors.
Lisburn City Council is very kindly supporting the races and Dromara CC would like to thank sports development officer Conlieth Donnelly and Lisburn City Council for all their help. We are also grateful to The Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure for permission to use the Lagan Tow Path.
